50 Metre Penalty

One thing that really bothers me with AFL is the 50m penalty!
In comparison to any other sport in the world is there any more excessive penality for a 'foul' of the laws of the game than the 50?

Surely a 25m penalty is more than sufficient penalty for something like not quite throwing ball back correctly, split second too late in a tackle or disputing a free with an umpire.

Use the 50m in more serious free kicks like striking and reportable offenses.

Is this just me?? Need some feedback people

I think the SANFL has got it spot on with the 25/50m penalties

It's time the AFL sropped ******* around with the rules every year for the sake of ******* with the rule and actually look at things like this that have worked well elsewhere

apparently the policing of the 50's will be tougher than ever this year (goodie!)

Personally, I think they need to get back to the basic reasons behind why they brought the rule in in the first place - and that was to stop the serious time wasters. Fair enough, give a 50 if someone gets clobbered, but a 50 for being a bee's d*ck over the imaginary line is ridiculous.

Imagine cricket no balling blokes who overstepped an imaginary line?

Yep - I can think of two and they are both from Soccer. The send off is a pretty harsh penality and when the Referee points to the spot you probably aren't going to go home happy. A penalty shot at goal in Soccer is like giving the opposition the Football eqivialent of ten goals.

They were pretty obvious.

Good thing that it wasn't a competition with prizes awarded for originality or extra points added for an obscure reference. A question was asked and it was answered.

I think it was more the original statement that should have been thought through.

Ill pay a penalty. But in the box u know u gotta play it fair or ref will point to the spot. But a 50m penalty from even 75m away from goal is pretty much giving any decent kicking player a 'penalty' goal. Yes the value of the goal is not quite the same but still.

Red card is for very serious offenses, something the afl waits out the game and gives them the next week(s) off! eg. Hall Vs Staker. How a player that commits an act like that on the field then is allowed to play on is just stupid.
Not a fan of 2 yellows = 1 Red. But in some cases it is well deserved

Gotta bring back the 25 asap

The 25 has merit with minor offences like the hold after a tackle etc.

Thats exactly my point. 50m for rough conduct, striking and maybe even time wasting

The thing that fires me up (especially when playing) is getting 50's paid against me for hits after the balls gone...9 times out of 10 its momentum carrying me into the player, because if someone has the ball im trying to get to him before he can get rid of it...so run flat out. Its hard to stop when you're only 1m away when he kicks it.

One that comes to mind is one that got paid against me against Aldinga last year...i laid a player out as he kicked it (he still only had one foot down, so i dont see how its late in the first place). The 50 was paid, and i got the standard smartarse "thanks mate" from the player...to which i replied "come here, ill give you a shot from the goalsquare"...and the ump nearly paid another one for just SAYING that...didnt even do anything yet...

Agreed duncs often a 50m penalty for a minor offence is too harsh.

Watch a DVD of the Essendon/Hawthorn Grand Finals in the mid '80s
then you'll see why the 50 metre was brought in.
Players who took a mark were always grabbed and jostled to prevent them
handpassing or playing on quickly.
It still frustrates me to watch these games when this is always occuring.
If you bring in a 25 metre penalty, then teams will sacrifice 25m so can they prevent
the opposition's flow. Then you'll go back to having the same problem that I
alluded to in the first sentence.
