ESSENDON today wore yellow armbands in respect
to all Cancer sufferers in the game v Melbourne.
The AFL in its infinite wisdom has told Essendon
not to wear the yellow armbands or face a fine.
The Essendon administration defied the AFL and
wore the arm bands.
Bearing in mind one of thier own Adam Ramanauskas
is indeed a Cancer sufferer.
Peter Crimmins died of Cancer in the 70's is one player
who lost his life.
Australians have a 33 % approximate chance of having
cancer related illnesses.
One in three of all safooty posters may well be affected
by cancer if the statistics hold up.
This is close to the heart for me and iI am absolutely
disgusted by the AFL stance on this topic.
Good on you Essendon Im really really proud of you.

Don't worry Mal, Essendon will not get a fine for this. The reason? Demitriou is over in Germany watching the World Cup & would have no f**king idea what's going on in Australia (he still has no idea even when he's here!)

PR re: Demitriou
With those qualifications he should apply for the
job as the A'int Kilda coaching job.
Those pricks are the lowest if they do not retract
thier intention to fine the bombers.
The news headlines should be: BOMBERS V BUMMERS.

I have one question. Why would the AFL tell Essendon not to do it? Is there any reason why the AFL should care if Essendon were to wear yellow armbands, but teams can wear black armbands? If there is no cancer research or prevention promotion, its only a matter of time before those yellow armbands turn into black armbands.

can sort of understand the AFL as we cant have every team wearing something different wheneber they want for frivilous reasons....issue here this isnt a frivilous reason, good on Essendon for going ahead with it, the AFL will leave this one alone if they have any morals

Bombers fuming over $20,000 armband fine
Email Print Normal font Large font June 19, 2006 - 8:00PM
Essendon is fuming after being fined $20,000 by the AFL because its players wore yellow armbands in a game as a show of support for teammate Adam Ramanauskas, who is battling cancer.
The Bombers plan on checking the league's own rules to determine whether they can be hit with such a heavy fine given the gesture was intended as a show of support for Ramanauskas, who is fighting a third bout of cancer.
The AFL denied Essendon permission for its players to wear the armbands in Sunday's round 12 game against Melbourne at Telstra Dome, but the Bombers defied the directive and went ahead with the plan.
Essendon's gesture coincided with Daffodil Day, which is designed to raise awareness of cancer.
"It's just really disappointing," Bombers spokesman Simon Matthews said.
"We're being fined $20,000 and the AFL has endorsed a $5,000 fine imposed on a player for breaking the nose of a member of the general public," he added in reference to the recent penalty imposed on Port Adelaide ruckman Dean Brogan for his altercation with a fan.
"We're not sure how that works."
Matthews said the Bombers had hoped the AFL would have made an exception when the club first raised the issue.
"We hoped common sense would have prevailed on this, it's a different issue," he said.
"This is about showing a bit of support to a teammate and a friend who is going through a tough time, and the players wanted to show their support in a different way.
"We'd hoped the decision makers in there would have understood that and made a bit of an allowance."

A very worthy cause also, is the Hawthorn v Saints, when they wore the checkered Police arm bands, in memory of Victorian Police Officers, who lose their life in the line of duty.
My question is- how is this any different?

It's not, except the Police look after the AFL, and cancer reserch doesn't profit or help them

Only playing the devil's advocate here but it was probably deemed as different because the cops died and Ramanaskas didn't?
Or perhaps the AFL's making a stand because Essendon weren't willing (orginally?) to have an alternate guernsey but are quite happy to add a touch of yellow for their own reasoning.
The AFL's problem here is probably where does it stop and they may have set guidelines. (Im unsure, just putting up the point)
Perhaps Essendon should wear yellow hats this week to show their support for people with skin cancer?
The prostate cancer week should be interesting.
In short I'd say there's a lot more to this than just what's in Essendon's press release.

They're playing like blokes typically old enough to have prostrate cancer
