Apparently the AFL have decided to give the teams that lose a 'top echelon' player 2 draft picks that they can use at any time over a 5 year period. They must nominate the year they intend to use them before the start of that season.

What's everyone's thoughts on this? I reckon it's fair enough.

I'd be happeir with the number one draft pick next year as a Geelong supporter, if we lose Ablett.

The league will determine the 'top echelon' players based on their age and new contract value. So the more a player is offered elsewhere the more points it generates for the player's grading.

So a club gets two first rounders for a top echelon player. It's fair that clubs have to nominate at the start of the year if they're going to use their compensation pick so they can't wait and see where they finish.

Will need to review in more detail but looks to have some subjectivity about it, which will no doubt create further debate when a player is eventually compared to the compensation picks they generate.

I'd be happeir with the number one draft pick next year as a Geelong supporter, if we lose Ablett.

Not sure if the Cats could use a compo pick until the 2011 draft, but if finishing near the top either way they won't get a pick inside the top 10 for GAJ.

They should be entitled to one though. One of the greatest players to ever play the game.

Mate, Geelong have had a dream ride with father son picks so just suck it up and be grateful that you got him as a 3rd round #40 pick, were able to fill up a list with other 1st round picks and had some premiership love with him. If he stays or goes Cat's have had their luck with the draft.

They deserve at least a top five pick next year for him if he leaves. We'll agree to disagree. He's one of the greatest players ever and we may get some pissant draft pick for him in a couple of years, when the draft picks are going to be at their weakest according to the good judges. Who cares if we picked him up with the father son rule. That has nothing to do with the fact that we may lose him in his prime.

If the "top" picks can be realised at any time in a 5 year period, what happens if the draft year is bumper and clubs are scrambling over themselves to grab a Natanui, Gibbs, Scully, Trengove etc? Only 16 picks really constitute a first round pick - unless they are priority picks. What happens with the priority picks?

Imagine club x has a shocker in 2013 and fall from 3rd to bottom. Assuming no club has a 'standard' priority pick, club x would normally get the number 1 pick. But what if 10 clubs all say they want to put their "special Gold Coast and GWS compensation pick" to use in 2013? That could be the first 20 picks. What if club y happens to 'earn' a priority pick in 2013? What if a father-son pick is in the mix for a 'round 1'. All sorts of permutations seem to arise on who gets precedence over who. Club x could find that its round 1 number 1 pick is suddenly the 29th pick overall.
