I think the family falcon/commodore would get to Melbourne on a tank of juice these days. Petrol was unusually cheap this weekend for some reason



I don't think I need to to attend the Grand Final any more. Went to the ANZAC day game 2 years ago and think that would be just as good.

Who knows the prices paid to scalpers....I dont particulary like scalpers....unless I am the scalper.

A Falcon XR6 mate. Less than 2 tanks needed to get there and back. And that was via Geelong on the way back.

A Falcon XR6 mate. Less than 2 tanks needed to get there and back. And that was via Geelong on the way back.

Less than 2 tanks. So at least 1.5 tanks which would be at about 105 - 115 litres. How many kms did your trip cover ? Had to be at least 1750km or so. Even at 130 litres , that is not even 7.5 l/100km.

I am a bit concerned that your engine management system is not working correctly & your motor might be running too lean a fuel mixture. It will burn the exhaust valves. If that is the case, you also will be also down on power.

Maybe your figures included starting with your tank full ? ( not included in your costings ). If not, get your car checked.

I did the trip and used $110 worth of fuel. $70 in Aarat on the way there, $40 in Horsham on the way home.

As for the tickets $500 would be my top price, although I'll be getting 'em for nothing next year if I want 'em.

Me and the missus paid $3,000.00 for two tickets in 2009. A lot of money, but when that final siren went, it made it all worthwhile.

Nah, filled up at Castrol at Darlington on the way out, made it to Melbourne and filled up again outside of Geelong.
Its 742kms to Melbourne from my place and approximately. Then probably about 60kms to where I filled up outside of Geelong.

802/68 = 11.8kms/litre
Obviously it wasn't bone dry empty when I re-filled so fuel efficiency would be in the 10-11km/litre category which is exactly as I expect it to be on the highway (and I just did a google and this is spot on as to what its supposed to be - 10.9)
Trip back from Geelong is approx 700kms.

Are you sure that is not supposed to be 10.9litres/100km. That would be a lot more reasonable for a Falcon.

Slightly off topic, les, my FG XR6 sat on 7.9-8.3l/100 km between here and Port Vincent with cruise control on.

I don't disbelieve you guys, I just go by the figures sent out to us. I am pretty sure the current Falcon XR6 is about 10.2 - 10.9 l/100km on the highway cycle and I have customers who get about that. Usually you have to drive like a grandma to achieve the figures quoted, but if you guys are getting better , that is interesting.
I would really like one of you to do a longer term test of the economy & let me know. Sounds like great efficiency.

A grandma wouldn't achieve my sort of fuel efficiency as I'm an incredibly smooth driver which takes skill and knowledge, most grandmas slam their foot on the brakes when approaching anything that looks like a new speed limit sign. Like Booney I'm an avid user of the cruise control and use that for most of my slowing/accelerating/cruising.
Mind you its much better these days as you don't strike any stop lights until you get into Melbourne CBD and both the last 2 weeks I've been fortunate/amazed to have every lane open on the West Gate Freeway.
Unfortunately I won't be able to do any study for you now as I doubt I'll be doing any trips to Melbourne until next footy season, could be 2 or 3 footy seasons the way I spent money this year!

Not I good sir, after spending 2k on accom alone as well as over 2k for memberships/tickets, a hundred or two for fuel really doesn't concern me especially when it all goes on a card as part of our lease. I was just answering questions from less drivers to hopefully aid them in their quest to be as good as driver as I am.
I'm glad I had the foresight to not book plane flights with the strikes Qantas had and driving is so cheap.

thid thread is hilarious!! meanwhile Les, my holden ute (SS, 6.0 litre V8, 6 speed manual) gets less than 10l/100k on the open road (not sure on exact figures, somewhere around 9.5, but it obviously comes up when in town), and i am sure the above mentioned XR6's would do even better with ease. Wedgies figures actually sound high to me, but that would be due to the fact that is was loaded up with family, kids, stuff for holiday etc. my figure is usually with just me and my swag on board. also i think you will find that your 10.2 to 10.9 figure is the comined cycle.

anyway, myself i have never had the urge to go to the AFL Grand Final, buti am sure it would be an awesome experience. i reckon it will be on my bucket list so the amount i would pay to go would be directly proportional to how close to the end i though i was
