Your reason for supporting a VFL club- with different colors

Thought it would be interesting to divulge why we chose to support a certain VFL club, which was different to our own SANFL club, in terms of colours.
Ie. I'm North Adelaide here, yet go for Collingwood.

I originally went for South Melbourne (R & W, 1981), but went over to Melb for a finals game, & came back with an Essendon flag (1983)
I had no real allegiance to any club from '84-86, & with the formation of WCE & BB, I followed them with some interest (BB had recruited my fav NA player, Matt Campbell).
By '88, I started paying a bit more attention to VFL (as games were being broadcast into SA more regularly), & I followed it generally, but found that 2 of my favs (Milane & McGuane) played for the same club- Collingwood.
As I moved back to Murray Bridge at the start of 1990, after junior footy, I would go home & watch the sat arvo match on C7, & during this year, Collingwood were on a majority of the time, which cemented my following of them.
When the Crows were formed, I followed the formation with interest, but there was one critical theme recurring through the club- Glenelg. So as I refused to follow a Pseudo-Glenelg side, I stuck with the Pies.

Had a bit of a soft spot for Carlton back in B.C (before Crows) mainly due to the SA contingent playing at the time.... now i just feel sorry for them

I was never interested in the VFL until they started showing live VFL to get SA to join the national league. I first had a soft spot for Melbourne and Footscray because of the Redlegs and the Eastern Suburbs Roosters who also shared their colours. Then I saw this bloke called Gary Ablett play and promptly became a Cats fan. To me he is still the best footballer I have ever seen with only Carey coming close. Once I decided to pick a side I stick to it and have done so even though the Cats have given me nadda ever since.

When the Cows were founded in 1991, I was genuinely excited about what was happening in SA Football and even cheered them on when they clobbered the Hawks in that first match (as I hated the Hawks and Brereton with a passion). I used to go to the State Games in the 1980's and I even used to yell out 'Come on the Crows' (I know that nobody will believe this mind you but there you go). However, I could not choose to shift my loyality to 'the team for all South Australians' because it was just a glorified Glenelg. The choice was an easy one. Stick with the Cats and the Redlegs and **** Cornsey's mob. It would have been a much tougher decision for me to make if the Redlegs made the AFL as they are the only side that has given me any joy on that last Saturday in September (or to be more precise, that first Saturday in October).

If either the Legs or the Cats folded, I would cease to follow that league.

Being a third generation Port Adelaide fan,my allegiance here was clear from the start,then,in about 83/84 (age 8-9) I started to take more note of the then VFL,my older brother was at that time still interested in football and followed Hawthorn,having let's say,after I helped him in a small money making exercise,he went to the local sport's store and invested in my first ever Hawthorn jumper.In the years to come (late 80's early 90's) I obviously enjoyed the times following the Hawks and the number 19 (Dunstall) was quickly ironed onto the back of my jumper.Not a bad number to snaffle,anyone with an interest in footy knowing that bloke was a champion.Funnily enough I still have that jumper,as in my playing days at Lockley's it was my training guernsey.

Now,with the Port Adelaide Football Club gaining entry to the AFL my allegiance went with them,this is not to say I no longer follow the Hawks,there is a soft spot,but as I said,Im a wharfie,a cockle diver first and foremost,and don't think for one minute Im not proud of it.

I was only five when the crows came in to the AFL and i cant remember following any form of footy before that. my old man followed the bulldogs or Footscray back then so over the years i have developed a soft spot for them.

Now my dad just throws objects at the tv and yell abuse @ the umps like that they are ever going to hear it he also has the uncanny knack of when watching it on the tv the crows start start playing shithouse and the opposition begin to dominate.


I blame him for the loss to Freo he must have watched the whole game from start to finish

I started going for West Coast when they first came in because they copied the colours and logo of West Torrens. Also liked Parramatta because of the colours. In '91 I switched to the Crows...

Have a soft spot for Sydney with a great-uncle that played for South Melbourne and Mum's from Sydney. Also have a soft spot for Hawthorn with Dad's side pioneering that area.

I'd happily swap winless seasons for all these clubs in exchange for a premiership for WWT though!

Pre- AC - Followed Kernas and McGinnisssssss Didnt mind Hawks as probally team I heard most of. Did think VFL was SANFL 2nds for years though!!!! Always wondered why Richmond players were not listed in the Budget.
Post AC - Started supporting Bears for no apparent reason but to be less main stream from the rest of the chipmonks.

When it comes to the VFL/AFL I've had more clubs than Jack Nickalaus!!!

When I 1st became interested in the AFL (1979) I followed North Melbourne because Cornesy transfered there.

When he came back halfway through 1979, I started following Richmond because of their colours.

When Richmond started going brown from 1983 on I sort of lost interest in it despite living in the NT where the SANFL coverage was non-existant compared to the VFL coverage.

Sort of had a soft spot for Hawthorn after their great play in the '83 GF, which i thought was pretty sensational whilst keeping an eye on Richmond getting ready to jump on their bandwagon after one of their infrequent wins in 84& 85 but didn't really follow anyone as Glenelg started to play well again after our disastrous year in '83.

In 1986 when Stephen transferred to Carlton I jumped on to their bandwagon and followed them up until 1990 because they had #4 playing for them.

When the Crows joined in 1991 I jumped onto their bandwagon because of the Glenelg influence and followed then closely (after the Bays).

In 1995 and 1996 after Cornesy got shafted by the player revolt the Shaw years saw me lose interest again.

Finally in 1997 I started getting back on the wagon and the events of September '97 and '98 confirmd it for me and have stayed with tehm ever since. Since 2000 I have been a member putting my money where my mouth is.

I readily admit for the first 17 years of following VFL and AFL I was as fickle as they come as the VFL/AFL clubs have always never been in my heart compared to the Bays. I love the Bays and I'm devestated when they lose, I follow the Crows but losing to Freo doesn't really bother me.....

Well, this is an easy question to answer.
I follow Geelong in the VFL despite them having different colours to North Adelaide as they're the team I follow in the AFL!

Wheres the Essendon flag gone mate, should have stuck with the Bombers and celebrated a bit more success.

I started following the Bombers in '82, they had been strugglers for a while, as had North during the late '70's, I guess I always went for the underdog, I didn't believe in jumping on board a successful side just so I could brag about how good they were, but I did jump on board to enjoy the emergance of one of the most successful sides of the '80's.

Gained some interest in the VFL in out 1988 when I started collecting footy stickers, was a Bears fan and my favourite players were Brad Hardie and Warwick Capper, I also didn't mind Richmond at the time Craig Lambert and Dale Weightman were my favourite players, also liked the coach Kevin Bartlett.
When the Crows were formed I went them for a few seasons but got tired of hearing about them all the time plus I didn't like them getting Robert Shaw as a coach, went back to the Tigers in 1995.

1981-1982: Barracked for the Swans early on. Why? Have absolutely no idea.

1983-1990: Switched alliegences to Collingwood once Jack Cahill, Greg Phillips and Bruce Abernethy joined Choco at Vic Park. Colours and emblem were the clincher. Dumped the Pies midway through 1990 when the AFL bid hit the headlines and McAlister campaigned against us.

1991-1996: Pretty much just cheered all the former Port boys on - Wangas at Essendon, Braddles at Carlton and yes, even Bucks at the Bears.

1997 'til infinity and beyond: Port Adelaide.
