Dont think Goddard and Chapman were involved that year. I was going to say how well Chapman played on debut. And still cant fathom why Geelong let him go. Especially that he wanted to end his career at Geelong after giving them many years of service and loyalty.

Why the bitterness towards Essendon as a whole? The players arent the ones at fault. Either is Bomber Thompson.

While I don't agree with the decision to let Chapman go, I can answer your question.

The club were worried about losing talented young players who have played off in successive VFL Grand FInals to other clubs. Unlike, say the Lions, we are aiming to give some of these guys more opportunity to play league football. You can' t expect guys like Murdoch, Brown, Burbury, Horlin-Smith, McCarthy and Kersten to keep playing in the Magoos when we are in an eighteen team competition.

Now none of the blokes mentioned are in the class of Chapman but Chapman's Hammys remain a worry for the Cats. The club warned Chapman that he was going to get the 'Mooney' treatment and only be provided with limited opportunities. Chapman exercised his right to walk and the club did not stand in his way (Geelong normally allows players to go to their club of choice rather than be obstructionist about it).

It's a win for Essendon because they replace Crameri with someone who can actually play. It's a win for Chapman because he gets to play another 20 games and possibly another finals series. It's a win for Geelong as we can retain our next generation of Cats instead of our club becoming a retirement home for ageing Champions.

regards,

REB

REB,

A very good account there on your views on perhaps why they let go of Chapman. Its just a pity that players that are getting on a bit but can still play pretty good footy are looking to other clubs to playout there careers. There should be a policy that the AFL can let the clubs keep their older players on their list without affecting the rest of the playing group.

When you've got players above 30 ( like Chapman & others) and playing really good football. The AFL should encourage them to keep playing and come up with a plan that they can still have the same playing numbers ( inc rookies, etc). It would be disappointing to see these older blokes get pushed out the door to play in the amatuer leagues.

What's going to happen when he returns to coaching? How will the media and supporters alike treat him? There will be a fair bit of pressure on him i imagine.. i cant see him lasting too long actually.

I really thought they'd give him the arse, I figured the amount of negative press he has and will ultimately create upon his return would see them cut ties with him.

Trouble is Little in his wisdom extended his contract for 2 mor years. We are not short of cash but dont think the club os willing to pay out his contract aswell as the fines we still owe. Has also been talk that a couple of major sponsors wanted him to stay on

So why isn't Little's position under question for sanctioning such a stupid contract renewal for Hird on ridiculous money moments after he (Hird) just put the club into disrepute last year.

Why is this prick Hird such a protected species???
