Idea for a tweak to the finals series

I have an idea for a tweak for the finals series.

At present it seems to me that there is too big an advantage to the top 4 sides. Given there has been very few sides to make a prelim from outside the top 4 I think this is true.

A small tweak could be made.

The winners of the finals in week 1 get home ground advantage, NOT the highest ranked team.

This would mean the loser of the qualifying final gets a second chance, BUT they have to play it away against the winner of the elimination finals.

I think this would throw an interesting spanner in the works, and make the qualifying finals all the more interesting.

Downside is that a team could finish third and never get a home final, and the team finishing 5th gets two home finals, and that might be the main reason this can't work, but it would make the semi finals more interesting also.

Stupid call. You reward the higher ranked teams.

LOL benny, like the free ride the Crows got when they lost their first final and weren't penalised the next week and went on to win the flag?

The top 4 get the reward they deserve. There is a reason teams 5-8 hardly make a Prelim, its because they are simply not good enough. Will never happen but id prefer a top 6, sick of rewarding mediocrity.

I think next year we will get a Top 10 (just to accommodate Crows fans)

top 6 have a week off while 7th plays 10th and 8th plays 9th for the right to play in the finals

What a surprise, a Crows fan that wants to reward teams for not winning enough matches to rightfully earn the double chance. And we all know why that is don't we? 97 crows get a home final against Geelong who finished second that year. 98 finish 5th and get belted and get the double chance. Flags won by the Crows using the current finals system? ZERO.

I'd like to see the return of a final five system. Any lower and you don't deserve to be playing finals footy.

The final five gives clear advantage to the team finishing top of the ladder and that's how it should be.

Not with eighteen teams in the comp.

the biggest problem with a final 5 or 6 is there are so many more teams that are out of the running from halfway through the season. this would have a big detrimental effect on the competition. it is pretty exciting for fans that there were so many teams in the running for the finals.

saying only the final 5 should make it because they are the good teams is kind of irrelevant. look at the sanfl, how many teams have won it from 5th. norwood back in the early 90s?

Norwood was 84 Benny.
I can see your argument about keeping as many sides interested for as long as possible but you cant reward mediocrity. Where do you draw the line, a final 18?
If you havnt won enough games you dont deserve to play finals, cant cater for everybody.

I think the final 8 in a 18 team comp is a good ratio and works well.

Look at this weeks line ups, Looks like an awesome week end to me.

Sometimes I think people just want change for the sake of it.

also in 1997 rik you lost to 7th on the ladder, why did you then deserve a home final?

tbh it has absolutely nothing to do with the crows success during that period, but i really like the older mcintyre system as opposed to the one we have now. just made things a bit more unpredictable whilst still rewarding the top teams, which i think is a good thing

yeah agree with this. i think a final 8 is about right, and would not support it being extended any further.

interesting wikipedia page on the old mcintyre system, and some of the pitfalls of it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McIntyre_F ... ght_System

i can see why they stopped using it in the end, but i do like the unpredictability of it, and it stops the elimination finals being viewed as dead rubbers

It shouldnt be about unpredictability though.
Under the McIntyre system there was no guaranteed double chance for 3-4, one bad day and they could be out.
Its about right how they have it now, should be nearly impossible for the bottom 4 to a Prelim let alone a GF. Reward the top teams for a good years work
