The Blues are flying.

Flying so high they've upgraded Cameron Wood off the rookie list to the main list.

Not going to be good season for the Blues.

That shocking jumper is not helping either they are wearing tonight.

Going to be a long season for the Bluebaggers!!!!!

Let that be a lesson to you Sturt. You don't beat Glenelg 3 times in a row in Grand Finals and get away with it.

So, we're not 100% full strength yet. Neither are West Coast and I don't know 100% but I'm pretty sure Richmond we're close but not quite.

That gives us a good reference point.

Against Richmond, we were ok for the most but get overrun easily with a slow midfield and weak backline. Richmond will be there and thereabouts, possibly, in my mind finishing 8th to 10th?

Against West Coast, our weakened defence shone through. Our forwards are pretty much getting the delivery of an Under 8's team and obviously with the giant frame's of Jones, Henderson, Menzel or Casboult won't even win 50-50's when the ball is put on their head or kicked along the ground. That type of game would be ok if we had Betts or Garlett but we've given them away. The latter for pick 80 and 100! Anyway, West Coast will finish maybe 10th to 12th this year.

So where does that leave us? We've gone backward in the draft(s) of recent years. Effectively losing those two games pitches us at about 14th or 15th. A great result for a coach that came in to polish us, given Ratts couldn't quite get the job done.

We're a none trick pony. When the game is open and flowing, we look great (see the past two first quarters) but we don't have any game plan to shut the opposition down, nor do we have the skill to set guys free. We get boxed up, the opposition rebound off us and run us off our feet. Our ruck stocks are a disgrace. Not having Kruezer on the park for the best part of 3 years hasn't helped but he's not the ruck solution we need. The opposition rucks give them first use of the ball every time and we tend to go backward from there.

Of the first 7 games, only St Kilda looms as winnable - maybe Brisbane if they lose a Rich type mid on the way through. Otherwise we're stuffed.

Our season was dead in the water before we picked up Jones and Tutt. It's going to be a long long long winter.

That Judd trade looking better each week, still cant fathom how the list management team at Carlton deemed Kennedy as surplus to their needs. They have a ton of small mids from their high picks yet no key forwards or backs. Watch them target Dangerfield at seasons end lol

Menzel was apparently "injured" but he got towelled up a second game player. Bell is nearly 24, and is a good bustling strong bodied mid but developing youngster?

Drafting and Trading has been horrible.

Gibbs and Kreuzer haven't been what you need from number one picks and that is corner stones for your club to be built around when you are coming from the bottom. Let Betts and Garlett go for peanuts, Invested big in an outside wingman who is a good player but had serious injury cloud over him,

Watson (18) Lucas (12) Yarran (6) Bootsma (22) Menzel (11) are all first rounders. 2 aren't at the club anymore, 1 doesn't know what position he plays, 1 was on the trading block not long ago and Menzel looks like he will be a good player.

Its a tough tough rebuild for the Blues. The decision on Mick will be soon i think.

Not surplus mate. He was the obvious choice. He was young, a high draft pick and from WA. If he said no to the trade, then the deal would've fallen through and no matter what happened thereafter, he would've been the Carlton whipping boy!

At that point, we had no one else in that category. He was very much a required player, so you can't say he was surplus.

As it was, we had to sweeten the deal with WC (fair enough too) and we gave them another draft pick for Judd. Judd has won a Brownlow with us and held our midfield together during his stay. At the time I said we didn't need him because we were "throwing all our eggs in one basket". I still believe that but Judd has been sensational at the same time.

Whenever you give away two players (or one draft pick and one player) for a player, you're putting yourself at very large risk of thinning your list out as we have. So with that, I'd say the proof will be how good a player Kennedy and Masten are overall. Tough to say right now because we're so sh1t.

He knows mate. I'm not sure the coach does though.

I do agree, we haven't recruited well for our deficiencies.

Menzel

Daylight.....

In no particular order.....Cripps (age 20), Docherty (21), Bell (24), Kruezer (25), Jacksch (20).

Problem is, none of those ones after Menzel are match winners. They're good depth players.

Kennedy would be wasted at Carlton, there'd be no Judd in the middle to get the ball anywhere near him.

Long, long, long road ahead for Carlton......especially when Mick is so honest about how shit they are!

Kennedy - wanted to keep but couldn't as we know

Waite - weren't prepared to give him 2 years at his age, injury prone ways and suspend able brain fades.

Betts - wanted to come back to SA for family

Garlett - was sacked for late night misdemeanours

Could have made a massive mistake by getting Cloke - bullet dodged

Casboult has great hands but struggles with kicking.

Need to throw a stack of money at one of the key forwards around the comp but are any of them out of contract at years end??

Hard to blame the Blues for Kennedy, Waite or Garlett. Could have done more to keep Eddie I reckon. Dale Thomas was a massive mistake for the cost. Cloke would have at least given them some sort of target. Seems as though their biggest issue in recent times has been talent identification and/or development program.
