That would be about the 5th time he's been rumored to have received his 3rd strike.

Maybe. The hawks couldn’t even half fill the G last week.

Despite being in sparkling form in his 16th season, Sydney defender Jarrad McVeigh still intends to retire at season's end, his coach John Longmire says.

Last September, the club announced McVeigh had signed on for this year with a coaching role to follow his playing career finishing up. When that time would be was not announced, with a Swans statement saying: "A decision on his playing future post-2018 will be made at the end of next year."

However, Longmire told Melbourne radio station SEN on Saturday there were no plans for the 33-year-old to extend his 311-game career.

"At the moment, he's retiring at the end of this year. That's what the plan is," Longmire said.

"We haven't had any discussions contrary to that but he's been playing well. He's just really contributing every week but we haven't had any of those discussions yet.

"The plan was set at the end of last year and we haven't spoken about any adjustment of that at all to this point."

McVeigh is averaging 22 disposals per game and is ranked No.12 in the competition for total rebound 50s.

Meanwhile, a half-time spray gave the perennial finalists a reminder of how much room for improvement there is, even if they're sitting pretty in the top four after an ugly win over Carlton.

The Swans have finished outside the top eight only once in the past 15 seasons.

Longmire's men, who face St Kilda away before hosting ladder-ladder West Coast in a blockbuster, are on track to extend that streak.

That is not to say all is rosy at the SCG, as Longmire and the club's leaders explained at half-time of Friday night's clash with the Blues.

The Swans eventually eased to a 30-point victory but trailed by a point after the opening two quarters.

"A little bit of a spray at half-time, got the boys up and about," Isaac Heeney told AAP.

"It was led by the leadership group.

"We've got to be on our game from the start. We've got to start producing four-quarter performances if we want to beat a team like West Coast, who are flying.

"We're playing a bit of inconsistent footy at the moment and it's just getting us over the line."

Longmire, speaking in his post-match press conference, lamented how the Swans' work around the stoppages dropped off in the second quarter.

"We just weren't doing what we should have done. There wasn't enough communication, some structural things. We touched on that at half-time," Longmire said.

"The players were able to sort that out, get it organised. Which was important."

I don't mind that, good to see players leave the game on a high and not milking it or preventing a kid from having a crack due to reputation.

I'm not a big fan of McVeigh but have gained a tremendous amount of respect for him and the way he goes about his business.

seems like he would be one of those guys that would move straight into coaching, and wouldn't be on big coin at the moment either, so its not one of those cases where he can hang on for another big payday before he returns to "normal" life

I know we spoke to him at the end of last year about playing for 1-2 years and then moving into coaching but he was very loyal to the Swans. Hopefully if there isn’t a role there next year we give him another call

You don't think so? I would've though general inflation over the years would see him in the top half a dozen money earners at Sydney, could be wrong though.

At 33 they'd have known he was close to the end so his deal would be outside the top 12 at the club I'd guess.

he only re-signed for a single year this year didn't he? wouldn't have thought it would be a lot of cash given his age and injury history last year

A PAIR of Sydney stalwarts could be going around again in 2019, with veteran defender Heath Grundy revealing that both he and Jarrad McVeigh are keen to continue their careers.

Grundy, 32, played his 250th game a fortnight ago, but says he's feeling as fit as ever during a campaign in which he has remained one of the game's most reliable key defenders.

Meanwhile the 33-year-old McVeigh has overcome a difficult season with injury in 2017 to return to being a mainstay in the Swans' defence, playing 12 of 13 games this year.

Grundy said that as a result, both would be keen to remain at the club beyond this season.

"If I can keep contributing and if 'Horse' (John Longmire) sees me in the side next year, then I'm happy to keep going," Grundy told SEN.

McVeigh will return to Sydney's side ahead of its crucial clash with Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Thursday night, having missed its previous game due to injury.

It was the first game McVeigh has missed all year, with the half-back enduring a campaign to forget last season as he managed a troublesome calf problem.

The 2012 premiership captain played just 13 games for the entire season, but has rediscovered his best form this year to average 22.6 disposals per game.

"I think last year, with his niggly calf injuries, he looked like he'd finish up," Grundy said.

"This year, he's been pretty solid. He only missed last week, but he's been getting 20 to 25 touches every week. He's extremely important to our structure with his ball use and his experience and he sees the game really well.

"If he's playing good footy, there's no reason why he can't keep going. He loves his footy, he's right into it, and I'm sure he wants to keep going.

"If his body can hold up, he's shown this year that he's found a routine that works for him and he's been playing pretty well."
"Fellas, it’s OK to be in pain. It’s OK to hurt. It’s OK to be sad. It’s no longer OK to suffer in silence."
