Following on from the discussion in the underrated players thread, here is one for the stats men, as well as the football purists. Who makes your "Team of More than a Century"?

Here is mine. I will add detailed analysis of why I selected my team later.

Valleys’ Team of More than a Century

B: Gavin Wanganeen (Essendon/Port Adelaide/Port Adelaide (SANFL) Matthew Scarlett (Geelong/Geelong Falcons) Kevin Murray (Fitzroy/East Perth)
HB: Bruce Doull (Carlton/Jacana) Edward “Teddy” Whitten (Footscray) Andrew McLeod (Adelaide/Port Adelaide (SANFL)
C: Keith Greig (North Melbourne/Brunswick) Greg Williams (Geelong/Sydney/Carlton/Golden Square) Nathan Buckley (Brisbane/Collingwood/Port Adelaide (SANFL)
HF: Jason Dunstall (Hawthorn/Coorparoo) Wayne Carey (North Melbourne/Adelaide/North Adelaide) Gary Ablett Snr (Hawthorn/Geelong/Drouin)
F: Leigh Matthews (Hawthorn/Chelsea) Tony Lockett (St. Kilda/Sydney/North Ballarat) John Coleman (Essendon/Hastings)
R: Graham “Polly” Farmer (Geelong/East Perth), Ron Barassi (Melbourne/Carlton/Preston), Bob Skilton (South Melbourne)
I/C: Ian Stewart (St.Kilda/Richmond/Hobart), Richard “Dick” Reynolds (Essendon/Woodlands), Mark Riccuito (Adelaide/West Adelaide), Gary Ablett Jr (Geelong/Gold Coast/Geelong Falcons)

Hopefully we get some diverse selections and some good debate. Please try and refrain from turning this into a sh*tcanning thread :D

Admire your efforts here mate and I appreciate how hard is time to pick these teams as everyone opinions differ, Obvisouly mine included but it would be super hard to add players we've never seen play relying on stats which I've always said are so misleading.

For example- Port play the Hawks, Hawks win by 16 points Kane Cornes floats around on a wing collects 36 touches and kicks at about 50%. Rioli plays across half forward has 14 touches 4 goals 8 tackles. Highlighted stats say Kane 36 Rioli 14 and was better on the night, Yet IMO this is far from the case.

Saying that the stats of Farmer,Skilton, Whitten, Murray and the like speak volumes but I've never seen them play, Many you speak to say Doug Hawkings was one of the best going around I really never thought that of Doug at all.

Interesting picks in your side for mine are Scarlett over SOS and Mark Riccutto in over Micheal Voss/James Hird/Paul Roos/Paul Kelly and Chris Judd (Some will say Goodes but I wouldn't)

Other points of interest would be the opinion of how many times did Buckley play wing? Say over a Peter materea (Spelling)? I know it's hard to fit them all in and yes I agree Buckley should be in.

Great work tho valleys I like it.

As discussed with @valleys07 via Facebook, here is my side:

F: Leigh Matthews, Tony Lockett, John Coleman
HF: Kevin Bartlett, Wayne Carey, Gary Ablett snr.
C: Keith Greig, Greg Williams, Robert Flower
HB: Andrew McLeod, Ted Whitten, Bruce Doull
B: Gavin Wanganeen, Steven Silvagni, Kevin Murray

Foll: Graham Farmer, Ron Barassi, Bob Skilton

Interchange: Simon Madden, Dick Reynolds, Ian Stewart, Gary Ablett jr.

It's not too different from the team Valleys selected, but this is the team I'd want playing for me tomorrow.

Having Madden on the bench relieves Farmer, and gives the side a decent forward option. Of course, Matthews and Bartlett can also rotate through the midfield, and the side wouldn't skip a beat.

There's always going to be some unfortunate champions who miss out.

I have issues with picking players I've never seen play, I generally only select players from my era whether it be Football, cricket or synchronised swimming.

If anything and opinions are like the proverbial's, I think your full forward line and full back lines are too tall, pretty impressive line up though mate, will be hard to top.

Kelly is probably the best captain of my era, hard as a rock.

Both wonderful footballers, but I reckon Kelly is a bloke you want in the trenches with you. Could play tall, kick inspirational goals, tough as overlooked steak.

Not at all - considered by many to be Collingwood's best-ever player (Pendlebury could replace him at the completion of his career).
If I was suggesting Gavin Brown or Peter Daicos be added, then that would definitely be Collingwood bias.
But Buckley is one of the greats, whether you like him or Collingwood, or not.

Same with the FB line too, also doesn't take into account a style of footballer .. Ie, do you want a HBF with the best defensive action, or one that can create offensively?

Bucks fits those criteria ;)
Kelly, a wonderful player, was never considered as one of the best in the game - Bucks was in the triumvirate of Voss and Hird in the debate for that title for much of his career.

I think you'll find that the only people that will pick Bucks are Collingwood supporters, a great player nevertheless but wouldn't be in mine either.

There's a lot of champions to leave out .. Kernahan, Platten, O'Loughlin, Blight, Cousins, Peter Moore, Langford, Mew, Brereton and the list goes on. Pretty lucky to have seen so many great players.

I'd say that's more to do with bias against Bucks/Collingwood than bias for.
