Be interested in peoples thoughts on the bye after the final minor round, prior to first week of finals.

Cost us massive last season I reckon, had a ton load of momentum coming into finals and than you have to have a week off....
But if you finish outside the top four and have a few niggly injuries it's perfect. Ask the bulldogs....

With respect to helping niggly injuries. surely that can help all sides not just those outside the top 4?

Don't mind it.
However, I think the SANFL and SAAFL could use the weekend off to their advantage. I know it's fairly early for grand finals ( in either comp ) but perhaps making the SANFL finals kick off then with a double header, or SAAFL kick off their finals would be a great way to get people back to their roots before the AFL big time.

Disadvantages the teams that win the qualifying finals, two weeks out of three off. If its to remain the finals system needs to be changed.

Fair point

i like that it disadvantages the top four teams a little, in that it makes the finals series a little more unpredictable - but its not going to be a massive difference.
as a fan though it does suck a lot of the momentum out of the season - you are building up to the best part of the year, and then a week off? that sucks

So you work hard all year to finish top 4 and you get disadvantaged???

ok why not just award them the flag straight away then?
if its a finals series, then all teams should at least have a meaningful shot at winning the flag.
if you arent good enough to win after a week off you still dont deserve it. and you still get a double chance which is huge

In a top 8 finals its only a double chance for the 1st week

Correct, it's not a legitimate double chance system like the SANFL or traditional final 5 setup.

They all have a chance. But finish top 4 you should get the greater advantage.

Double chance with home ground is
the advantage.
As for the season losing momentum, I reckon it builds the finals up even more. Was jumping out of my skin by the time the first final rolled around last season.
So personally I like this bye, but totally understand why many (or most) don't.

Yeah, playing Hawthorn at the MCG was a huge advantage to Geelong.

Yeah, because that's not a separate issue or anything ...

Its very much a part of the same issue. Geelongs ONE advantage was they got a week off after the first week of the finals if they won. That is now a disadvantage as they get 2 out of 3 weeks off which is too much.
The pre finals bye eliminates the ONLY advantage Geelong got in finishing near the top.
If they want a round 23 bye make the other rules fair first otherwise it makes existing disparities even worse.

You're arguing a different issue though aren't ya? I thought the bit above was about not getting SS for a home final?

No, Im saying the bye eliminates Geelongs only advantage of finishing near the top.
If other things are changed so this isnt the case then fair enough, consider it then.

OK, well that's been a problem since well before the Bye came in, so separate issues as I said
