Couldn't see a thread for this as yet.
I've been mighty impressed with Burton from the Hawks - yes I am biased but he looks like he will be a ripper.
The lad from Essendon (insert name here) started the season well, has he dropped off a bit?
Who else is in the running?

You'd think Burton, Powell-Pepper and McGrath would fill the top 3 spots at this stage

Yep Powell-Pepper is the other one. The times I have seen him he goes alright.
Is the a market out for this? Boon?

Burton looks all class, he's got an old head on young shoulders ( North Adelaide boy who the Crows over looked for Tom Doedee ).
McGrath is also a clever player, looks like he's got some future leader about him. Very good mid sized defender.
However, my biased view is that Powell-Pepper should be the favorite at the moment, well, I mean I hope he wins it. Some solid bets at $41 and $26 on him will make for a nice little kicker going into the spring carnival for me if he gets up.
He's played all 14 games, is averaging 18 disposals, 1 goal, 4 tackles, 3 I50's, 4 clearances and 5 tackles per game. He's had 250 possessions to gate, 126 contested and 124 uncontested. He wins his own ball too.
In all reality I think Burton is more polished and will probably win the award being under the nose of the Victorian media.

Currently :
Burton $1.58 ( far too short IMO )
McGrath $4
Powell-Pepper $5
All others $26+

Hipwood will go close.
KPF who in a struggling side who is coming on in leaps and bounds. The AFL just love the Brisbane factor aswell, remember Lewis Taylor

If SPP doesn't win it then whoever is voting for it know nothing about football. He has stepped into a side and made a huge impact as an inside clearance winning midfielder. Burton will be a star but he's playing across half back as a loosey - he's going to rack them up but in all reality doesnt have the same impact SPP does. Burton also plays 85% of the game, SPP 64% - obviously because of the physical nature of their roles.
SPP's clearance stats for a first year player are amongst the very elite - we're talking Judd, Selwood type stuff.

Burton was playing on Darcy Moore yesterday, so yes you are correct, he was a loose man in defence!

Please, refer to him as Rafa, not Eric.

I reckon SPP probably wins it but I think Burton is the better player.

Played on Walker the week before and kicked more goals than him.
Burton wins easy.
Who does Powell-pepper play for?

Burton won the game for Hawthorn the other week against the crows.
His hard running forward was excellent. Worked tex over and made him pay.
SPP has the AFL's second most punchable face behind Chad Wingard. On that basis alone you cant give it to him

Odd, I thought with you being a Crows fan you'd see more of Taylor Walker than most of us. Enough to form an opinion that correlates with ours, anyway.

and SPP won the game vs Sydney. And Freo. and Brisbane. and was exceptional in the loss against Richmond.
Burton is my clear 2nd and will probably win it playing for a prominent Vic team, but SPP has had a huge impact on Port this year and is playing in a more difficult role.

They both average close enough to 20 disposals a game.
SPP has
50% of those disposals contested.
Ryan Burton?
24%.
Double the amount of contested possessions.
as I said, Burton is a gun, and will be an elite player, he probably has a higher ceiling than SPP too.
But SPP has had a ridiculous amount of work put on him this year and has eaten it up.

Most punchable face, needs its own thread perhaps?
FWIW - Charlie Cameron, daylight second.
