2017 Retirements

Seems a huge list of retirements this year which is obviously fine when your time is up its up. My issue is the 'labels' being handed out to these guys such as 'Champion of the game' 'superstar' 'Champion' etc Jesus some of these titles are given out far to easy.

Example- Bob Murphy, seems a ripping bloke, Good half back flanker, spent a long period of time at the top of his game. Champion- No way.

another champion label was given to Scott Thompson.

Just cant believe the 'labels' being handed out to 'some' of these blokes.....

Fair on those two.
Love Bob, but his media profile has grown over the past two years and with it his stature in the game. Best half-back flanker ever? ;)

Not many 300 game players in the AFL...I'm happy they are labelled Champions.
Both All Australian, Thommo a BnF winner too.

Thompson - 15th all time for disposals, 6th all time for tackles, 12th all time I50's, 5th all time clearances, 1st all time clangers :D , 7th all time contested possessions, 308 games, AA, 2xBnF and most importantly a North Haven boy who is a Port Adelaide boy.

He's earned the right to be called a champion of our game I reckon.

So Kane Cornes must be a champion as well then???

FWIW I don't rate any of these 'champions' Thompson and Murphy very good players no doubt, Champions not for mine.

I'm not sure what the point is, are we limited to how many times we can call someone a champion?

FWIW I don't think Murphy is a champion of our game, he's a very serviceable half back flanker and clearly a quality leader, he might be a champion of Footscray, but a champion of our great game? Probably not, probably the same for K.Cornes, champion of our club but not of the game itself.

Well in the AFL, you're either a Flog or a Champion. Take your pick...

This quote from the article reflects a few of my thoughts on this conversation.

"Some commentators have suggested over the past decade that the game is too intense and fast for Tuck's tally to be bettered, but given that the list of 400 game players doubled last year as Harvey and Dustin Fletcher both reached the nigh-on-impossible mark, perhaps we should be resetting our gauges?

Madden won't be surprised if Tuck, Harvey, Fletcher and Kevin Bartlett have to find a bit more room for their reunions. "I think there's a chance we could bump up the number of 400-game players on the basis that it's in the club's interests to manage these players, and it's in the players' interests to hang in there for as long as they can.""

I think 300 games used to be a good discussion point when considering whether someone's a 'champion of the game'. Now we need to 'reset our gauges' a little.

For example: Tony Shaw, Collingwood games record holder, premiership captain, one of only two Magpies to have played 300 games for the club (the other Gordon Coventry).

Collingwood champion. Not an AFL/VFL champion.
