Isn’t their another way they can get picked up still this year?

Griggs been tried at the level and I think recruiters are wary of getting a dud.
Can't he get a rookie spot though?
You never know he may have matured enough to succeed at the top level.

If you are after short term gain Grigg is better than anyone drafted this year and would have more impact.

Bullshit, Dreaming. He is over weight and not worth it , short term or long term.

He is the best player currently not in the AFL system. Most of the draftees will have little to no impact next year and possibly the year after. Grigg would easily rack up 20-30 touches a game for someone like the Suns and would easily have more impact than Rankine and Lukosius combined next year

Totally disagree. His disposal & decision making under pressure puts him ahead by a mile.
Would be an excellent short term proposition.

Thats stretching it a bit far Jim. The two you mention will probably tie for the rising star.

Bullsh!t, 20 years ago maybe but not now. In some cases (very much the minority) higher than normal skinfolds (60-80 sum 7) can help you get drafted as an AFL club knows that there is an easy development opportunity there to get you better - get ready to run young fella....

In that context though you would need to have elite skills, decision making or the ability to play KPP though for the club to over look a bit of "conditioning"

Ability/Skills (in the context of being able to play in a variety of positions) and character are very much the metrics AFL clubs will draft you by with speed and aerobic power in the mix too.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Because most clubs believe they know what a player like Grigg's ceiling is, whereas with the youngsters they don't. They also prefer to take the risk on developing a kid hopefully into a 5-10 year player, whereas they often believe the "here and now" player won't help them for too long.

Just on Griggy, I have no doubt he's good enough to play AFL (once he dropped a coupla kegs), but not sure he'd be an automatic first choice so understand why the clubs take the option they believe will serve them better in the long run.

The only sides who could really use him in the short term, Carlton, Fremantle and St Kilda ( IMO ) aren't in the market for a quick fix, they know there's some pain before the gain.

Some sides who are looking for that next step like Port, Essendon, North and Geelong probably don't see him in their best 22 and, as noted, would be more likely to look at someone who could potentially be in their best 22 in 3 years.

Mav Weller, who played 13 games with St Kilda this year, has been picked up by Richmond in the AFL’s new Pre-Season Supplemental Selection Period, he's joined them outside of the draft/trade period, however he can't train with them until December 1 after he withdrew his name from the 2018 AFL draft.

Funny thing is, I wonder if the AFL are turning a blind eye because it's a big Melbourne club, but this from the AFL's website :

SOMETHING significant happened this week that may not have immediately felt that way.

The announcement of the full breadth of the AFL's latest rookie rules, first revealed in early October, heralded a new era in player movement – and promises so much more.

Previously-listed footballers who spent a season or more out of the game no longer have to go through a nerve-racking draft experience to find an AFL home again as a Category A rookie.

They can instead sign with a club in the pre-season supplemental selection period (SSP) between December 1 and March 15, after all the drafts are over.

So, what's the go here then?

Free agents are picked up through the trade period, you can't ( well ) just waltz from one club to another.

No, but welcome to the new millennium.
