WEST Coast premiership forward Willie Rioli will face court in Darwin on Wednesday after allegedly being caught with cannabis in the Northern Territory.

It is understood Rioli was due to fly from Darwin to the Tiwi Islands on April 23 when he was allegedly stopped by a drug detection dog at Darwin Airport.

Northern Territory local court lists show Rioli will face court on Wednesday morning charged with possessing a schedule 2 dangerous drug in a quantity less than traffickable (less than 50 grams) in a public place.

Rioli had been planning to fly to Perth in late April before putting his return on hold due to the state's snap lockdown following an outbreak of COVID-19.

The 2018 premiership star is free to train with the Eagles from June 20 and play AFL from August 20 after receiving a backdated two-year ban earlier this year after tampering with a urine sample in 2019.

It is understood West Coast received confirmation of Rioli's impending court date on Wednesday morning. Club officials will meet to formulate a response on Tuesday.

Both the Eagles and the AFL have been contacted for comment.

Will be interesting to see how the Weagles and AFL handle this. In some parts of this country what he did is not even regarded as a criminal offence. I assume he will be given a couple of games off, to be served after his current suspension finishes. Similar to what happened to Crouch and Stengle. It would be good to see Willie back playing in the AFL.

Could Willie pay for the sins of players from a by gone era.

Drug issues at WCE have been very well documented. Could this be the clubs opportunity to make a real statement that they have 'cleaned up' their act.

Acknowledging Willies misdemeanour is no where near the level of what previous players were allegedly up to.

It’s illegal to take any drugs or alcohol to the Tiwi Islands isn’t it?
Very dumb

Not sure what the laws are in relation to Tiwi Islands, but he has only been charged with possession of 25g which in some parts of our country is not a criminal offence. But, you are right .... given his situation, it was a pretty silly thing to do.

And that's why he messed with his piss sample. Pot head.
Does he really want to play at the highest level.
His actions say no.
Shame, good player.

Same here. He's good to watch ( when he's not playing against the pies)
But how many chances do you give a bloke?
There's 800 kids out there busting their asses off trying to get on a list.
Professional sport comes with sacrifices, dedication and making good decisions.
Smuggling nearly an ounce of weed to the tiwi islands isn't meeting any of the above.

Such a shame, such a silly thing to do. What is he, a month out from returning to the club and he's got weed...at an airport!

Goose.

Depending on his prior history of offending, which may be none, that's a fair enough result, especially IF he has no criminal history.

It's not exactly the crime of the century.

As mentioned earlier, it's not even a criminal offence in some parts of this country. Will be interesting to see how West Coast treat him. Their main issue will be that he didn't inform them when he got caught three weeks ago.
