Talk on the national game

I'm stoked Trader watches Port's AFLW as closely as I do, the club built the squad with short term in mind but also had the opportunity through the draft to build for the long term, Ewings will be an absolute star in the future.

Looks forward to Traders review, but good day at Alberton. Brings back some nostalgia of being a kid heading out there watching the Magpies and thinking the ground was the greatest place on earth.

On the game, Port were good from the first bounce, Ewings is a deadset freak.. and O’Dea is still one of my favourite players to watch. The foot skills are still improving week too week, and as mentioned previously with minimal pressure these girls are actually extremely good kicks over short/mid range.

$20 @ $15 for DeMelo first goal has filled the coffers for the weekend.

Well done to the Port girls, been coming for a few weeks now.

Was a hater or womens footy.. then an acceptor.. then had an admiration and respect for it.. now I think I could comfortably sit and watch a live game most weeks. On that - Live is far far greater than on tv.. much different spectacle, and you can see more clearly the standard of some of these athletes.

Haha, certainly no review. More just some random thoughts or talking points from the games I see.

Agree that womens footy is better live than on TV.
As soon as you watch it on a screen you subconsciously start to elevate your expectations to the top tier stuff.
It's the same with community cricket.
If I watch an A1 ATCA game live the bowlers look quick and the batsmen's footwork is sharp, but if you watch it via frog-box all of a sudden they look like a bunch of park cricket hacks.

Anyway, onto the game, got the W as expected. Far too strong for the Sydney side which is quickly looking like they haven't taken a path that will lead to success in the short term. Their side is full of players who aren't footballers. Ham the clear exception to that.
We can talk about it being the biggest win ever by a first year team, etc but I think a lot of those sort of stats come down to the luck of the draw and when you play against the basket-case side. A goal-less second term against the bottom side was the item that jumped out at me more than the winning margin. Still plenty of room for improvement.

Ewings we've been talking about on here for a few weeks so no surprise to see she dominated. What was nice though was she finally managed to kick straight this week, after starting her AFLW career with 4 behinds, she finished Round 4 with a 3 goal bag.
Dowrick again had another cracker, really like her work.
Young Syme put in her best effort to-date, with a great first half before dropping off a little.

I think we will see a bit more of that over the coming rounds, good intensity before fading late. After all, outside of the girls we've picked up from other clubs, the bulk of our list have only been in the system for 3 months. They don't have the pre-seasons in their legs and they are spending large amounts of their time trying to work out the systems and structures. The fitness and skills only have so much time to improve.

I've harped on a few times about it, but another tall is clearly required. When Levicki rested it was Halfpenny who tried to ruck and it was clear that's not a role she's used to.
Our inside mids are good, our backs are solid enough, a genuine ruck and a dominant forward will be the key priorities before season 8 kicks off.

Looking at next week, a tough trip to the gold coast in what could be an interesting match up. Several of the current power players are former suns, including their previous captain Hannah Dunn. Will they be happy to catch up with their former teammates, or is there some bad blood that explains why such a large group left the coast to join an expansion side.
The suns are playing some reasonable footy and despite inaccurate kicking yesterday, they showed their dominance over St Kilda who aren't a bad outfit themselves. The power will have to develop some plans to deal with both Rowbottom and Howarth who look dangerous.
Danny Southern telling Plugga he's fat, I'd like to see that!

Plays as much outside as he does in, makes the likes of Duursma, Farrell and Bergman on the outside honest, makes Drew, SPP and Houston honest on the inside and brings 97 games experience at age 24 to the club from a place he won 2 flags and came 2nd in one of them in the club best and fairest.

Of those mentioned only SPP and Houston would be picked ahead of him right now, IMO. If it makes the others better, even better.

A better player.

It's an interesting one people somewhat questioning his worth. He probably lives in the Martin, Cotchin, Edwards, Prestia shadow a bit but he's every bit a top quality player.

He wouldn't want to leave I'm sure, but the addition of Hopper and Taranto makes the midfield pretty crowded at Richmond. Of course Cotchin only plays one more and Prestia plays one in 4 but he'd move a little further down the pecking order.

Probably replaces Drew, would be a part of the Rozee, Butters rotation, mids who can go forward.

I think Drew stays as the inside stopper and Graham adds to the mix that has just lost Amon. Amon played some inside minutes in the last two years.

I think Jack Graham could be a real decent get.....i mean its not like Cripss, Petracca, Neale are exactly on the trade table.

2 x premiership player
Returning to his home state
Good age at 24.
97 games under the belt
Averages 17 possies and 6 tackles a game and should now be coming into his prime.
Managed 42 games in the last two years so seems to not get injured much

Hardly think they are going to be giving away to much to get him, for mine could be one of the better trades in the off season.
