AFL Season 2023

Talk on the national game

I think with Tassie coming in we are step closer to the divisions.

10 vic teams 10 interstate teams.

Somehow i could see the AFL doing similar to the NFL with some wildcard system. Would imagine they would love finals that includes 6 and 6, 12 teams playing finals with 5 & 6 being some form of wildcard entry.

You then could have each team play their own division twice for 18 games and then gather round + a few crossover divisions games, More rivalry games, more finals games, more tv rights $$$$, more financially sustainable Victorian clubs playing in front of bigger crowds each week + even less travelling.

Until you play everyone home and away in the same season it remains a competition that is open to draw manipulation as currently occurs.

I don't think the AFL are to be worried about changing that especially if it means lost $$$$.

Let's be honest when Geelong lifted the cup in September 2022 no one is thinking about the fixture list they had. I'm not sure the AFL consider it the biggest deal.

With the success of how they managed through the COVID season this wouldn't surprise me one day, with shorter games, midweek games and larger squads.

Was probably the hardest fixture any team has had to be honest. :D

So far only looked at the first few rounds for the Hawks.

Round 1 - Sunday 3.20pm V Essendon MCG - Shit Time on a sunday but will probably go.
Round 2 - Sunday 1.10pm V Sydney in Sydney. TV game beer, BBQ
Round 3 - Saturday 1.45 pm V Norf in Tassie... Where else can you hide the game?
Round 4 - Easter Monday Vs Cats @ MCG - again 3.20pm. Only game of the day - start it at 2.00pm..... whats so hard? Probably go.
Round 5 - Gather Round folks... Sunday Vs GWS at Norwood at you guessed it 3.20pm.....I like footy at the Parade. doubt I will get there though.

So whats that 2 games in the first 5.

I like the 3:20pm Sunday timeslot for my team, get to do all my shit early in the day and have a few beers, wines and a roast in the afternoon.

Even if I'm going to the game, there is little chance of it clashing with anything, can stop off for a couple of quiet ones at the Queens Head afterwards.

Agree - I reckon the twilight time slot is fantastic, your whole day isn't taken up with footy, can get other shit done and still go along, good for young kids playing footy also.

in the first 15 rounds that have been released we dont need to get the yellow footys out, the latest local timeslot is 5pm, no dinner plans will be interupted following the Hawks this year.

Pretty sure I’m a little older than you blokes. No kids to worry about, although I get the kids playing footy Sunday mornings, so from that perspective 3.20pm works.

So a 3.20 start in Melbourne, game finishing around 6.00pm. Get out of the G onto a train, 45 minute ride to our station, then walk to the car, drive home. 7.30pm at best by the time we get home. Dinner? Either on the way home, so add another hour, or scratch something together when we get home. A 2.00pm start gives me enough time on Sunday to do whatever and still get to the game in time. Then home by 5.30 ish. A lot better.

Fair enough, you guys can buy chops at 9am whereas we generally can’t, our Sunday starts later.

I’m usually in our box if I go so I can eat at the footy without taking out a bank loan.
