Why didn't the Bays wear this one in the Centenary celebrations? The ones you actually wore 100 years ago?

We did wear our 1934 premiership guernsey though, in 2021

Just saw a news report on people lining up for them & was thinking most Port people would have a prison bar guernsey already.

Have an old itchy one with a collar, 3 sizes too small. Grown men should be banned from donning guernseys period. Scarf, jumper, jacket, tees and polo's are acceptable.

My daughter who still works at my former employer got the box tickets for tomorrows game, so they told her to take me along too, I’m now working for a competitor. I’ll be with my old customers, can’t see us winning though

It was the sweetest of humble pies for supper on Saturday night and this scribe dined out on it.

After an underwhelming fortnight of preseason match ups in Perth Port Adelaide fans were disgruntled to say the least. Many of last years failings appeared again and optimism had diminished to hope when facing highly touted Brisbane in the first round of the year, a nemesis that had had our measure the last 5 encounters. Not this time and wasn’t it spectacular.

From the very first bounce young tyro Jason Horne-Francis stamped himself upon the game, the first handball to fellow young gun Connor Rozee and Port move the ball forward, within 2 minutes Todd Marshall snaps truly to open his and the clubs account for season 2023, the first of his 4.

It was soon after we got our first real glimpse of what might be, from a ball up on the 50m arc Horne-Francis takes possession, fends off one and with another opponent in tow hits the ball onto the boot and a selfless Marshall shepherd on the line sends the crowd and all 18 on the ground into raptures, Horne-Francis is in everything. Junior Rioli joins in the recruit party with a major and other than some errant kicking Port have control of the first term.

The second term brought some ill feeling into the crowd, 6 goals to 2 ( 1 of them, Dixons, after the siren ) and the Lions midfield started to control the ball, more so their forward 50 looked dangerous, goals to big men Hipwood and Gunston, smalls Bailey and McKenna with father-son star Will Ashcroft opening his career with a major, aided somewhat by a very ordinary effort from Port’s Byrne-Jones, instead of tackling Byrne-Jones tried to body Ashcroft off the ball but he showed his class in evading the contact and finishing truly. He’s a star alright.

It certainly was Power-ade in the bottles at half time as Port burst out of the blocks in the second half on the back of that young man again, JHF. He wasn’t alone though, Dixon was getting on top of Andrews, Jones had played a shutdown on McCluggage keeping him without a disposal for the term after having 10 in the first half and adding two goals himself, Aliir had the airspace in defence under control and Burton was keeping Cameron from having any impact on the game. In the middle Butters, Rozee and JHF were on the end of some Scott Lycett dominance. I, not alone, questioned Lycett’s role in the side and felt he needed to make a statement to hold his place, did he what. He made it clear he is and he wants to be the number 1 ruckman at Alberton in 2023.
The term was electrifying. Marshall kicked his second and third, Georgiades hit the board, Powell-Pepper and Dixon did too but it was JHF who lit it up. 11 touches for the term, 3 centre clearances from 7 attendances, 5 I50 and 2 goal assists. Is it too early to say he’s arrived? Why not. He’s arrived.
8 goals to 1 in the term and Port have blown the contest open.

The last term just as satisfying as Dixon out marks Andrews 1-on-1 three times in the opening minutes, spraying two shots but finally nailing his third attempt for his third major ( Aliir and Dixon had 10 contested marks between them, Brisbane had 4 for the match ) to put the margin out beyond 6 goals, when Wines and Rozee added to the Lions misery the margin is over 50 points and not just an upset, but a thumping, is unfolding under the late summer sun at Adelaide Oval in front of just over 35,000 Port faithful.

Winners across every line from Marshall, Dixon and Rioli forward, Duursma, Bergman, JHF, Rozee and Butters through the middle and Aliir, Burton and Farrell who impressed across half back / wings in defence.

It’s an interesting watch Port’s back half.

Burton, Houston and Farrell all line up in defence but such is the manner in which Port’s zone pushes up the ground the three of them, all elite by foot, are often pushing the ball inside 50.
With 10 I50’s between them it’s an area Port can take advantage of with their elite ball use.

Boon’s best – Horne-Francis, Rozee, Burton, Butters, Aliir, Wines, Lycett

Very nice Boon.

Although i would've definitely squeezed Dixon in to the best. Charlie is the whipping boy for most (especially from other supporters who don't watch the 2-3 hanging off him each week) but, reality is had he kicked straight he nearly rivals JHF for best on, well nearly.

Charlie and Aliir are vital to Ports success.

Actually had him instead of Lycett but thought Lycett needed to be mentioned.

That’s the sound of Port Adelaide crashing back to reality on the end of a 71 point thumping at the hands of the team to beat in 2023, the rampaging Collingwood. Rampaging they most certainly are.

When Orazio Fantasia pounced on a loose ball and converted on the run at the 13 minute mark of the first term it seemed Port Adelaide were up for the contest. Charlie Dixon had left Ex-Port Ex-Adelaide soon Ex-Collingwood defender Billy Frampton in his wake and had two majors, it was end to end stuff and with 3 goals a piece inside 15 minutes this looked like it was the contest most viewers expected it to be. That was the end of that though.

Collingwood simply dominated all aspect of the contest from this point on, the midfield took control and piled on the next 8 goals before Farrell and Marshall goaled just before half time, Adams and Mihocek adding two in between Port’s majors and 10 of the last 12 goals have been going over a Port defenders head. It’s about as close as they got to the ball for most of the first half. Most telling though the fact those 10 goals were from possession chains between the 50m arcs.

The Collingwood wave was gaining momentum with each thrust forward and Port’s midfield didn’t give a yelp. From half back to deep forward Collinwood created space when they had it and closed it down when they didn’t. Super impressive from the 14 man Collingwood midfield. Moore, Frampton and Quaynor the only defenders who stay at home, Daicos, Maynard and Noble push up adding numbers to any midfield contest and outnumbering around the ball.

From ground balls to aerial battles Collingwood were on top. Not only did they win the possession count by 30 in the first half they also registered 14 more tackles. Their pressure when Port had limited opportunities crippled our run. Mihocek, McStay were giving Jonas the run around isolating him away from Aliir in what was a clearly undersized Port defence and this allowed the ruck duo of Cox and Cameron to drop into the forward line bringing the likes of Elliott, Adams, Hill, Hoskin-Elliott, the list goes on, into the game.

Selection didn’t help at Alberton, I’m not sure much would have.

After half time Port managed to gain some possession and slow Collingwood down, 3.3 to 2.2 for the term and Port’s midfield had at least shown some grit, Drew on Mitchell worked as did the move of Dixon into the ruck and Powell-Pepper into the midfield. You can’t ever knock the effort of these two and that’s more or less the only thing Port can take away from the match.

The rest of the competition however can take a lot from it and that’s the level of intensity and Collinwood have delivered since early in 2022 is not only difficult to match it’s even more difficult to prevent.

The last term while 6 goals to 1, wasn’t the procession it looked like it might be, swarming their own forward 50 looking for a lick of the ice cream the Collingwood mids choked up some space and Ports defenders managed to at times get in the way.

24 hour rule here. Sulk for 24 hours then move on and what better target to focus on than a Showdown. *Gulp*
