No but like everyone else when watching a game of footy, you have a natural pull towards one of the sides. I feel the umps would be no different if thats caused from home crowd noise, what side they support, or whatever, so the 50/50s tend to go towards one side sometimes.

The worst part about this is that it was in relatively open play and the excuse was 'the umpires view was obstructed'.

With 4 umpires out there, and a contest out in the open, none of the umpires can see it?

Confirms they must guess a lot when there is a pack of players around the ball!

I think you have to throw in things like courage as well. Some umps have the courage to make a 50/50 decision that will decide a game where it is 'easier' to make a non-decision if you are not 100% sure. I'm guessing this is what happened in the Crows game. Umpire 'kind of saw something' but didn't have the courage to make a game defining decision without being 100% certain.

This is the most challenging part of umpiring, as an umpire you’re seeing the game inside out, opposed to the spectators who have a much broader vision, there can be up 20+ players between yourself and the ball and you’re supposed to make a decision based on what they can so from the outside.

I always say “I’m didn’t have clear vision and I’m not guessing, I’ll have it thanks”

Afl umpires are a bunch of "homeys" as in the home side gets favoured IMHO.

40000 power/crows/pies home fans screaming for "ball".

As opposed to away fans of 5000 screaming for "ball" down the other end for a similar incident.

I thinks its understable how it can occur in any sport.

Adelaide Oval : Crows 28 free kicks Pies 18.
MCG : Pies 21 free kicks to Crows 12.

I guess it kind of works out.
