The rare tie occurred in the third heat of a special Christmas event at the Wimbledon Greyhound track, run over 480m.

The photo-finish showed the noses of Murlens Houdini, Lightning Speed and Tinas Luke all within one-hundredth of a second of each other, with a joint time of 28.87 seconds.

"The odds of a triple dead heat happening are many, many millions to one," said James McCreadie, who is the spokesman for the Greyhound Board of Great Britain.

"The dogs are running flat-out at over 40mph [64km/h].

"It's like winning the lottery and being struck by a meteorite in the same afternoon."

It has been reported that the first ever triple dead heat involving greyhounds happened in January, 2011.

The most famous triple dead heat to have occurred in Australia happened in horse racing in 1956 as Fighting Force, Ark Royal and Pandie Sun tied in the 1956 Hotham Handicap at Flemington

The first triple dead heat that I know of and there is photographic evidence is from Sandown 1948 September 7 race 2 with grey bob, tattered mantle and royal spring. The photo is in great sporting moments -- the best images of the 20th century.

Some journalists certainly don't like research.
