SIMON JONES YOU ARE JOKING AND PERCY THE PUNTER

Postby mal » Fri May 25, 2007 1:16 am

Race 5 Saturday night and what a race
R5-9 URAJOKIN would be my number one favourite horse
Usually driven by Mark Webster but listed to be driven by the number one junior driver SIMON JONES
And this race is named after Percy The Punter the late great GRAHAM SILKE.
Graham was a trotting driver, punter extroadinaire, media tipster, and who
can only be described as larger than life.
Unfortunately Graham died about 3-4 years ago, he died on course from a heart attack [?]
Graham and I had regular on course chats for many years and was a wonderful man
There was never a dull moment when Graham was about.
The punting world is poorer by his absence

Carn Simon + Urajokin do it for Percy

He was in the know
He had a circle of punters who sponged of his tips
He was in his best punting form in his latter years

PERCY THE PUNTER was a great bloke who would share his tips
I miss our chats on course and at the Morphetville AUD

Postby theo » Sat May 26, 2007 11:45 pm

he said after he kept trying to cut all the trotting boys in half with the decent types around, the late great G.OAK SILKE sat him down in the front seat of the statesman one night at the trials, pulled the sun visor down and said, look in the mirror adios, what do you see? adios said i dont know what are you talking about G(the real G not the imatation 1 on this site) SILKE said i'll tell you what you'll see in the mirror, a BIG FAT UGLY GREEK MAIDEN, thats what you are, so in future if you go out with the boys try and race in your own league and stay out of theirs!!!!!!!!!!!

there you go ROBBER,

THAT'S THE STORY,

To often we (and me) focus on poor drivers and poor efforts..
BUT tonight - Simmo showed what he was made of...
Simmo put up a great drive on a good horse, but summed up the race to perfection - came to the breeze at the right time in the race and put the leader away at the right time also, perfect drive really...
I backed Matson/Hill on Florian Brave, but was actually quite touched by Simmo winning the race, knowing that both Simmo and "Percy" were pretty close - as shown by the wave of the whip 100m out by Simmo - well justified doing it tonight - was a worth while win and a big one in his career... A BIG well done to the young lad, he's worked hard to get where he is and now has won a "feature race" even if only for junior drivers...

WELL DONE IN WRAPPING UP THE RACE AND SIMMO, BY WHY RUIN ALL THE GREAT THINGS YOU SAID ABOUT THE NIGHT WITH YOUR CLOSING LINE, something like BUT IT WAS ONLY FOR YOUNG DRIVERS,

GIVE CREDIT, GOOD!!!! BUT DONT BRING A DOWNER ON BY RANKING THE RACE!!!! I'M SURE IT WILL GO DOWN IN SIMMO'S AND MANY OTHER AS ONE OF THEIR BEST EVER, I KNOW SIMMO AND MARK WEBSTER WERE VERY EMMOTIONAL,
GOOD LUCK TO THEM, PLEASE DON'T RANK THE WIN, SHOW SOME RESPECT TO THE LATE GREAT GRAHAM OAKE SILKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SIMMO and MARK savour the moment in one of SA trottings greatest ever moments
I wish I was there to see it but got a thrill watching this on TV

They should make MAY 26 A public holiday

Seriously wasn't meant to bring a downer on the race - sorry if it was taken that way.
All I was trying to say is Simmo has now had about 45 drives for 4 wins (including a feature win in a race - that was for young drivers) - it was not and never would have meant to be a put down to either Simmo or Graham...

The drive was terrific and it would and should have been emotional for all involved given how close Silke was with them... I think there couldn't have been a more deserving winner in the history of the race and it seriously made me appreciate all that I love about Harness Racing all wrapped up in one race...
