Martin fined for potshot at bookies

TIM Martin was yesterday fined $500 and told by Racing NSW stewards to "stick with training" after taking a swipe at Adelaide bookmakers in a TV interview.
Martin told punters watching TVN on January 28: "I just want to warn punters, don't back my horses in Adelaide because you might not get paid."
His comments were fuelled by the great greyhound sting involving South Australia bookie Curly Seal and Martin's good friend and client, Eddy Hayson.
Hayson and commission agent Steve Fletcher backed greyhound Lucy's Light in a lowly dog race on the Gold Coast before Christmas and won more than $700,000 from Seal.
Seal has since taken the matter to the South Australian Liquor and Gaming Commission and is yet to pay out.
Martin claimed at an earlier hearing Seal intended to sue him over his remarks on TVN.
Chief steward Ray Murrihy yesterday told the trainer to stay out of the Hayson affair.
"It's not up to you to champion
Mr Hayson's cause," Murrihy told Martin. "There is a line you have to draw in the sand and this is one line you didn't need to step over.

"Mr Hayson is capable of fighting his own battles. We suggest you stick to doing what it is you do best, and that's training racehorses. Don't get involved in this matter."
Martin said he never referred to Seal during the interview and it was only when an on-course commentator began wrapping up proceedings the link to Seal was made.
"Your words didn't single out
Mr Seal but they didn't rule out any of the South Australian bookmakers ... and we find those words prejudicial to racing," Murrihy said.
Martin said his comments were made in "jest" and were "spur of the moment". "I apologise to the Adelaide bookmakers, but I won't apologise to Curly because he's still yet to pay the punters," Martin said.
"If you place a bet and win, you collect, if you don't you pay."
