WTF Rebellious Spirit in a WALKOVER in England Races ??????

Postby jackpot jim » Fri Jan 11, 2008 2:24 am

An Unbelievable Event occured in Race 5 at Southwell races in England on Thursday Night.(Last night)
It was the last leg of the Quaddie on S/Tab and i had Runners 1,2 and 3 running for me in the 5 horse Field.
Whilst waiting to watch the race on telly, the power went off for a couple of minutes in my house and by the time it came back on the race was due to have been finished. When the telly came back on there was the no.4 horse, (Rebellious Spirit) just being trotted aound by the barrier and then all of a sudden the jockey took off on it.  WTF i thought to myself and was even more confused when the commentator said all it had to do was to WALKOVER the Finish line to Collect 1st Prize money.
I Then thought the unbelievable had happened and that there were 4 Late Scratchings BUT Even more to my Horror was that there was 4 Disqualifications !
Apparently from the brief explanation from the studios at Sky Racing i Gathered that there was a False start signalled and that only the No.4 Horse was pulled up whilst the other 4 runners continued on to the winning post which Under the Rules of racing in England constitutes DISQUALIFICATION.
This then Resulted in the RARE Phenomonon of a WALKOVER where all 1 horse has to do to win the race is just complete the course. It didn't have to bother starting from the barrier. The jockey just trotted the horse back to the start and after it was confirmed the others were Disqualified it just had to complete the formality of completing the course.
UNBELIEVABLE.
Did anyone else see this last night as i assume the above course of action was taken from the limited information i got.
Have never heard anything like this Before and i cant believe that they wouldn't be late scratchings but they obviously have some strange Rules in that Part of the world.
Rebellious Spirit was paying $10.30 on S/Tab (Outsider) and in effect those who backed were on a 100% SURE THING after the Botch up and those who Backed the other 4 Runners have done their money Cold.
It's 1 hour since the Race and there is still NO All Clear on the Race on S/Tab so i dont think the officials at S/Tab Know what to do.
Do their Betting Rules in England apply to Australian Tabs and their Payouts ???
Maybe thats what the delay is for ?

Ah Here we Go, The tab screen has Just changed to Race ABANDONED. Over an hour after the Race at 2.30 am.
That just answers my question, Our TABs Payout Rules Must be Independant to those of overseas Betting Agencies.

UNBELIEVABLE.

False start drama at Southwell

by PA Sport staff
.

THERE was drama at Southwell after four jockeys in the Great Family Holiday Deals @ pontins.com Handicap failed to stop after a false start had been signalled.

Andrew Elliott's mount, Jord, appeared to burst through the stalls a fraction before they opened, which led to the starter calling a false start.

Although the flagman further down the track indicated to the jockeys to pull up their mounts, only Chris Catlin aboard Rebellious Spirit obeyed the order. Elliott, Kirsty Milczarek on Dado Mush, Pat Cosgrave on Hucking Heat and Paul Mulrennan on Rigat all went on to ride a finish, with Jord crossing the line first.

Catlin returned to the start and galloped out the mile to record a walkover.

The stewards later confirmed the four horses who continued to race after the false start were officially withdrawn by the starter.

No starting price was returned on Rebellious Spirit and all bets on the race were refunded.

However, a number of firms announced they will pay out on Rebellious Spirit'sfinal show price of 10-1, with all other bets void.

The circumstances are covered under Rule 28 (xii) of the British Horseracing Authority's guidelines, which state: "Should only one rider return to the starter and satisfy him as to his having obeyed the recall flag, his horse shall be considered as having walked over for the race.
"Following the recall flag, horses which complete the course in a Flat race shall not be considered as having obeyed the recall flag and shall be withdrawn by the starter.

"The riders of such horses shall be regarded as having committed a breach of these rules."

Peter Hiatt, the trainer of Rebellious Spirit, was grateful for Catlin's quick thinking.

"It's all credit to the jockey really," he said.

"I think one or two of the other riders started to pull up - I certainly saw them looking through their legs.

"Chris was lucky to be on the outside and in the best possible position to see the flag. He said he shouted to a couple of the others but they didn't stop.

"The horse out in front probably didn't see it, to be fair.

"I didn't really back him, I just had a little bit on as he was a big price at 10 or 11-1.

"I could have run him again tomorrow as he's not had a race but he's not entered anywhere. It will have to be a seller now as he's just got a penalty for handicaps."

Betfair said: "Rebellious Spirit was the only horse that did not complete the course after the false start and was therefore allowed to re-start the race.

"The official result is a walkover and according to our Rule & Regs all bets on this race are void."

When they jumped the 3 got through the barrier first and gained an unfair advantage
The 3 had jumped about 2 lengths in front of the others
Another horse was left several lengths behind [might have been the eventual winner ?]
The 3 led all the way and won the race
It was always going to be a no race because the barriers were distorted.
Should have been a no race, no restart for any runners
I was on the 3 in Quaddies as well, but have no grievances that is was disallowed the win.
Supetab rightfully abandoned the race.
Quaddie paid on any runner last leg

How one horse could restart and win the race for prizemonies ? is astounding however
