Mindarie Halidon Cup

Postby Mulligain » Tue Sep 16, 2008 11:11 am

Mindarie Halidon Cup, Sunday 28 September 2008.

A fantastic Mallee tradition that won't survive unless it continues to be supported! If you're a fan of racing and enjoy a good day out, organise a bus from Adelaide (2.5 hour drive) and get involved...

EVENT HISTORY -

The first racing meeting held by the Mindarie-Halidon Racing Club was on 3 September 1921.

The club has come a long way since that meeting with good facilities.

The small farming town of Halidon comes to life once a year when Cup Day comes around and the 'Melbourne Cup' of the Mallee - 'The Bardrill Mindarie Halidon Cup' is run. The club is supported by many of the farmers and business people in the district.

Cup Day is a picnic day with buses coming from Adelaide, Goolwa, Hahndorf, Loxton, Murray Bridge, Strathalbyn, Mannum, Swan Reach and many other areas.

The vision of the club is to ensure long-term racing in the Murray Mallee District with the support of Committee and volunteers from the District and to ensure the growth of the Cup Meeting and the Club.

The club aims to create a friendly and relaxed environment for all Race-day patrons and to promote thoroughbred racing in the Murray Mallee District with the best thoroughbred racing that can be presented, with the view of increasing prize-money for owners and increase patron numbers with promotions in the coming years.

Most Handsome pulled off a tight win in the cup on Sunday, just ahead of Token Hotshot and Two Fuhr One.

Good day at the races. Perfect weather. Had a good amount of wins getting on Mirthful Lass in the fifth and Start Praying in the last.

Backed Token Hotshot in the cup race and you can see how close it was.

Greg didn't perform too well in the cup race, refusing to budge once the gates opened.

How bad was Greg. The main event of the day, and the horse didn't move 20 metres. That should be a refund or something!

@ SS - it's Token Promise, not Token Hotshot....

I was on both of them, so was happy the longer odds got up! Have followed Most Handsome a bit since she saluted at reasonable odds in the Pt Augusta Cup...

That's right, think there's a dog out there called Token Hotshot or something, I keep confusing the two.

Yeah, looking at the race, Most Handsome had good form but over much longer distances. The race was over the 1800 and Most Handsome's best work of late was in the races around 2500m.

Just figured her to be a strong finisher but didn't think the distance suited.

Talking to the owners, they were thinking the same thing.

Soo close. What was Most Handsome paying at the end? It was at $5 when I was looking at it.

I was at the Mindarie-Halidon Cup.
I opened my account with MIRTHFUL LASS (3.30 )
I then backed Token Promise in the Cup, & the result is posted above... :(
In the last, my mates horse OUR PATERNOSTER was going around (the reason for the trip)- I backed that (e/w) & THERON, & both finished midfield.
Plenty of eye-candy around

@ SS - paid $10.30 on UniTAB

Token Promise is trained by a Murray Bridge trainer which is the only reason I backed it - has done well for me in the past too
