AFL Punting stories from the weekend - good reading

Postby Dutchy » Tue Aug 29, 2006 5:54 pm

Yes, no, maybe

THIS terminology was once used to describe the calling between wickets of Australian openers Graeme Wood and Rick Darling, but on Saturday it came into play for a Sportsbet punter who decided Melbourne was a good thing against Geelong.

He began by having $40,000 on the Demons to win at $2.05 and buttered up with a further $50,000 at $2.

When they led by 38 points he was home and hosed for a handy weekend, but then looked very sick when the Cats hit the lead midway through the last term.

And then Jimmy Bartel's handball was a second too late in execution, meaning the punter got out of jail.

Sportsbet pays half the face value of the ticket in head-to-head betting as distinct from margin punting where a draw would have seen him lose the lot.

And for his efforts? He finished $1000 ahead.

Not as happy

A CENTREBET punter had $1000 on the Cats at $9 at halftime, first seeing his judgment vindicated and then seeing it shot to pieces because at Centrebet a draw is a result in its own entity and the punter lost.

And then there were the Adelaide fanatics who backed the forlorn Crows from $1.55 to $1.30.

Centrebet alone took bets of $20,000 at $1.55, $15,000 at $1.35 and $20,000 at $1.30.

Biggest go

ST KILDA was backed like there was no tomorrow, firming from $2.10 to $1.90 with Centrebet. All other agencies recorded similar interest.

One Sydney fan decided the $1.07 on offer about the Swans was better than bank interest and outlaid $100,000 with Sportsbet to win a lazy $7000 for the weekend.

Brownlow action

APART from Adam Goodes there was continued support for Western Bulldogs veteran Scott West last week, with his price slashed from $12 to $4.50 before the Bullies played on Friday night.

One punter had $4000 on West at $7. But West is unlikely to have polled any votes on Friday and those who took the $4.50 can now get $5.50.

Punters' paradise: Swans all rage
11 September 2006 Herald-Sun
Jon Anderson

THE Sydney Swans, friendless in the betting at $34 after Round 4 when they lost to Melbourne, are now $2.70 flag favourites.

The Swans have come in from $5 and, according to those who set the odds, will continue to firm given their home preliminary final and the fact their obvious danger, West Coast, would have to travel to Adelaide.

Centrebet's Gerard Daffy said the Eagles were the obvious second favourites and second-best team, but because of the Adelaide factor he has West Coast third favourite at $4.

"I actually think the Eagles are still the best side in it, but with doubts over Daniel Kerr, Andrew Embley and Ashley Hansen you have to wonder whether they have the forward line to beat the Swans, who are surely the best drilled unit we have seen in football for a long, long time," Daffy said.

"Punters were still coming for the Eagles during the game but they underestimated the resolve of Sydney. As a bookmaker, rarely have I seen a side to come back against the odds like this Sydney team."

Centrebet had very good money for Adelaide in its qualifying final, with $10,000 at $2.05 and $11,000 at $2, although there was one bet of $11,000 on Fremantle at $2.40.

The Western Bulldogs were expected to drift enormously against favourite Collingwood. There were two $20,000 bets on the Magpies at $1.56 and one bet of $15,000 at $1.60.

Yet the Dogs, who began the week at $2.90 and were tipped by some bookies to get out to $3.50, firmed from $2.60 to $2.30 as punters realised their superior leg speed against the slow Magpies made them the value bet of the weekend.

On Friday, the Saints were perceived as good things, with one punter having $10,000 on them at quarter-time at $1.20, and another punter $10,000 at halftime at $1.17.

Despite the Bulldogs' scintillating form against the Pies, you can get $4 about them next week at Subiaco Oval against the Eagles, who are prohibitive $1.20 favourites.

And the other Perth home team, Fremantle, is $1.25 against visiting Melbourne at $3.50.

Daffy said Brownlow Medal betting had been quiet "because we're still waiting for those silly leaks to begin".

"The reality is Adam Goodes, Chris Judd and Scott West are going to fill two of the top three places because they have clearly been the best players in the competition this year."

Punters' paradise: Eagles pick over bones
18 September 2006 Herald-Sun
Jon Anderson

WEST Coast's demolition of the Western Bulldogs completed a horror weekend for football bookmakers in all codes.

The Eagles were backed from $1.35 to $1.25 with Centrebet and were the subject of several huge multi bets when coupled with NRL teams.

Before their match against the Bulldogs, one punter placed two separate premiership bets involving the AFL and NRL.

He had $15,000 at $12 on West Coast in the AFL, and the Canterbury Bulldogs or Melbourne Storm in the NRL (to win $165,000), and $15,000 on Sydney with the same NRL pair at $9 (to win $120,000).

Another leviathan punter took the two Perth teams, Fremantle and West Coast, parting with $60,000 at $1.80 to win a cool $48,000.

Then there was the $65,000 at $3.55 (to win $165,750) on the Eagles to win by more than 24.5 points and Brisbane Broncos by more than 5.5 (they won 50-6 against Newcastle).

On the multi theme, another success was the $30,000 plonked on Fremantle to win by more than 18.5 points, St George by more than 5.5 over Manly (28-0) and Queensland Roar to beat New Zealand (5-0) in the A-League. For his efforts $170,000 jumped in.

The Eagles were backed all week, with Centrebet being claimed nine separate times to the tune of $10,000 at prices varying from $1.35 to $1.25.

The bookies' only relief was a concerted move for Melbourne and a couple of huge wagers on the Bulldogs at the line.

Centrebet took a $12,000 bet on the Dees at $3.20 and $15,000 at the points (18.5). And a Dogs fancier thought a 24.5-point start was value and parted with $25,000. A like-minded punter had $35,000 on the same bet.

There was also a bet of $8000 on the Western Bulldogs at $3.70 and $40,000 on the Eagles to win by less than 39.5 points.

Centrebet's Gerard Daffy said a West Coast flag win would be a bad result for his firm.

"They are no good at all for us," he said. "Really they should be longer than Adelaide for the flag given the Crows have now had a week's rest and are playing at home.

"I haven't been keen on the Eagles up until Saturday night, but I'm now starting to think that losing to Sydney is the best thing that could have happened to them because they will get much-needed miles into the legs of players such as Kerr, Embley and Hansen.

"I can tell you now that they will start shorter than the $1.65 we have put them up for this week."

The hammering for bookies continued in the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos a mammoth go, firming from $1.75 to $1.45 and St George Illawarra firming from $1.55 to $1.45.

Bookies draw sigh of relief
02 October 2006 Herald-Sun
Adam Hamilton

BOOKIES sweated in the dying moments of the Grand Final after an unprecedented betting plunge on the draw.

TAB Sportsbet's Gary Davies said a draw would have been the worst result in the TAB's Grand Final betting history.

"We would never (have) had a result like that. It was a big, big loser," Davies said.

"Normally a draw would be a dream result for us, but because of the tight history between the teams, the punters just kept backing the draw.

"We opened it $41 and by the bounce of the ball the draw was into $18. It wasn't a case of any big individual bets, just a constant flow of $100 here and $200 there."

The draw was backed from $41 to $26 with Centrebet. Both TAB Sportsbet and Centrebet were cheering for the Swans.

"We definitely wanted the Swans because there was an amazingly strong move for the Eagles in the head-to-head betting for the week leading up to the game," Centrebet's Gerard Daffy said.

Daffy said some of the biggest bets on the Eagles included $25,000 at $1.74, two bets of $20,000 at $1.70 and another of $18,000 at $1.68.

TAB Sportsbet's biggest payouts were on early-season bets on the Eagles.

"In the early rounds somebody had $20,000 at $4, and during the finals we took another bet of $30,000 at $2.90," Davies said.

The Norm Smith Medal and first goalkicker are no longer novelty bets.

Both Andrew Embley (Norm Smith) and Ashley Hansen (goalkicker) were big payouts with TAB Sportsbet.

"Both were well backed, with Embley taking out $788,000 and Hansen over $400,000," Davies said.

One punter had $100 on the Embley/Hansen double for a collect of $16,100.

ADELAIDE has been best-backed for next year's flag. Daffy said half the bets taken had been for the Crows at $7.

On Centrebet I got Embley at 20/1 on Friday for Norm Smith. I know Hansen was 15/1 for 1st goal, so it shows that TAB were not offering as generous odds at C-bet were for this double!

I couldnt believe when they had Embley at 20's.
