with one bookie left why would he bother

Postby bayman » Sun Oct 08, 2006 12:39 am

i, scd & a couple of others noticed in just about every race tonight that the bookie went to the tote & laid off now why would you bother fielding if your going to lay off in every race ?

in the race books (both saturdays & mondays) has seal still operating

i think the way its going we may have no bookie within 12 months (if you can call him a bookie)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

I see your point BAYMAN
However the blame must fall upon the zero performing Trots admin.
Its the responsibilty of the club to induce crowds and turnover and
that is unequivicol at this stage.
Promoting, advertising, entertaining etc is not being adhered to [or
if it is its not eventuating to profit]
The club, if it does get reviewed by the press accurately is in turmoil
with 2 factional committee members fighting for presidency.
The protracted battle for a bloody commitee post is reputedly going
to cost the Trotting club about $200K?in legal fees.
Can you believe that

I remember heated commitee meetings at my old cricket club, only
difference is whilst we were mass debating :? we drank piss all
night and the club prospered.

Love him or loathe him Mr Dammerell is one of the most astute bookmakers
going around, hes out there to make a living.
If the clubs do not support him and turnover disintigrates, then yes Bayman
Im afraid there will be no bookies left.
He has already given up Wednesday dog meetings, what next ?

An official at the club told me a couple of years ago that when
there are no bookies at GDP , then the tote holdings would increase.
Thats a very inapproriate anology, as there is a correlation around, and
that is less bookies = less patronage, , no bookies no hope.
Tote turnover will actually diminsh if bookies become extinct.

Well this official wouldn't be one that is on $120k per year with a "company car" and has allegedly told a few industry participants that small people are not needed in the Trots in SA... That's right, we need professional trainers, like - L Justice, J Justice, G Webster, R Sugars who have left the state because they can't make a living - there are a few more are considering leaving as we speak...

This is after the trainer/driver fees this year were over $700 (which is more then the victorians pay - and they get $110 unplaced drivers fees metro racing on top of the $12000 prizemoney, where in SA we get $30 and it comes out of the $1200 prizemoney! - somethings not right there)

The admin side of things is not performing well either... There was a wave of new sponsors and some $600 - $700k in the bank 15 months ago... this should have paid for a track upgrade and the interdominion next year.. Now due to the TAB debarcle and a few other issues (building maintenance) the club has $0 in the bank, the new sponsors are gone and as Mal said there is a huge fight going through the courts re presidency, I for one hope the club isn't paying for that....

Now as for a ligher side = the crowd tonight, not only was it up, but Bayman's tounge was on the ground a few times as a few of the young girls walked past, in fact - we almost had to tie him to a chair after he followed one particular goble around all night...
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined
