the line/pts is basically the handicap given to each team by the bookies.

so DUTCHY's

2 Units Essendon -15.5 @ $1.90
1 Units Centrals -4.5 @ $2.00

means that essendon have to win by 16 pts or more and centrals at 5 pts or more. because both are fav they give away a start.

you can take the roughie in a game of footy at the line and they can lose and you still win.

so if you liked collingwood with THORNTON you could take +16.5 pts at $2.00.

so collingwood can lose by 16 pts and you WIN or they can win and you win!

Just curious if anyone can make sense of this for me. I just had a look at sportsbet for tomorrows game and I can bet on either team to win by under 39 points and not lose. For example if I put $1 on each (collingwood curently $3.75 and essendon are $2.25) and either team wins under 39 points I am guarenteed to make at least 12.5% return on my $2 bet. If this is true (and it's seems like it to me) then how do the bookies make any money?
p.s. only 6 games this season have gone over the 39 point barrier and at least one of these (WCE vCARL) you would have bet both under and over the 39 pts anyway.
p.s.s. will log my bets later in the week

yeah you can bet that way but it is in no way a gtee'd profit...7 goals etiher way and you lost both bets...if you were to bet this way you would be better off using Centrebets +39.5 option which gives you 39 points in for a team...e.g. Collingwood are $1.36 tomorrow at this option, you would only lose if Essendon win by more than 40...a word of warnign though Essendon are the most offensively effective team so far in 2007 and IMO could blow this game out
