SEMI FINAL TIME
Cheifs vs Hurricanes
The Cheifs are the form team having won nine of their last ten, includig a victory against the Hurricanes just a fortnight ago, but have injury problems - dangerous halfback Brendon Leonard (hamstring) and influential centre Richard Kahui (calf) both ruled out. The Hurricanes have an injury worry of their own with lock Jeremy Thrush (elbow) in doubt but his potential loss will be better covered by the visitors.
This is the Cheifs first ever home semi final and only their second finals campaign (other in 2004), while the Hurricanes have made the semi finals five of the last seven years.
These two factors are enough for me to back the 'Canes.
Bulls vs Crusaders
The Bulls are deserved favourites after narrowly claiming top spot and so with that home field (country) advantage against the three Kiwi semifinalists. The Bulls are unbeaten in Pretoria this season, but come up against a Crusader side who has a remarkable 11-1 semi final record. (the one loss was though against the Bulls in Pretoria two years ago)
The Crusaders are still wiating to see if lock Brad Thorn will be fit for the match, while the Bulls will be without suspended JP Nel, while centre Wynard Oliver has overcome a hip injury.
The wait for Thorn will have an impact upon the victor here, but not the lack of points that will be scored. Will be looking if Thorn plays and the line stays about 5.5
