MAL - you know that Wed and Gawler Scratchings are done 4pm night before.

The grading has been changed to split grading from Thur and Mond which has made beating the grader obsolete so most trainers are not backing up mon thur, You would probably be unaware they have had to extend mondays noms at least 4/5meetings. We simply do not have a big enough pool of 500m race dogs in the state if every dog only raced once a week we would have 8 race meetings

Thanks VicGirl
Your post is beautifully explained and a logical reason why we are having so many scratchings
Ryles has also explained that there is a viral sicky going around

I guess we can ascertain that enough races but not enough dogs to fill up the spots

MT79/and I get frustrated at the large volume of scratchings during the day meets
We have to restudy, often cant get any 2s or place bets on with 3 divs with less than 8 runners

Rather than cut back races per meeting or a meeting, how do we overcome the situation ???
?
:-?

I luv me dog racing
BUT

PS
BEAT THE GRADER being obsolete is good in my opinion
However the bad news is not enough 8 dog fields

Mal how do we beat the problem?

Increase the prizemoney so we are on or close enough to a level playing field with interstate.
This will help by:
1. Keeping better performed dogs in the state so they dont have to be sent interstate to chase the better prizemoney.
2. With increased prizemoney you will find breeders will start once again breeding more litters as they are more likely a decent return on their investment.

Why not reduce the amount of races if there aint enough dogs to go around?

Agree should be more incentives to breed, maybe a restriction of dogs that can come over from interstate e.g. only allow dogs younger than 30 months

gotta stop the THRASHamussens of this world somehow

SA - the reject state

There are sky channel contracts to fulfill, There are enough dogs to fill the races but it requires at least 50% Of the pool of racing greyhounds to race twice a week, The reason you will find that alot of perth dogs race only once a week is once they have a draw in a race that week they are placed at the bottom of order of entry and therefore only get in again if there is a shortage of noms (thats the way it was a few years ago it could have changed),
I have no problem backing up my dogs there are several i wont run twice a week but i have some that thrive on it look at West On Wallis 4th run in a fortnight goes .1 off best of the night and he was flattened in his 2 previous starts so it wasnt like he had easy runs, I just think you have to know the dogs i go coursing they have 3 runs in a day most of the time the best run is the last Greyhounds are quick to recover they only use short energy bursts.

Gamblings a hard game and i am the worlds worst i have no idea whats in a field before i get to the track i dont study form i just race my dogs for the prizemoney im trying to win everytime i race a dog you can guarantee they have been checked since their last run and injury treated but in saying that i have some bad dogs you have no idea what they are going to do 1 week to the next nothing changes they just stuff up

Another good informative post VG

MOST trainers that back up dogs are not a problem as they do it with SOME of thier dogs
So it is not a prob doing form
BUT
There are some trainers who back up ALMOST ALL of thier dogs ALMOST all of the time
When assessing those trainers dogs it is a guessing game which dogs can or cant back up
