http://www.crikey.com.au/2009/07/08/ashes-09-a-crikeyish-preview-of-the-first-test/

Cardiff has been a contentious host for the first Test. Last year the drainage was so bad that fans sat in the sunshine while a One Day International was called off. This year the groundsman was reported for making a sub standard pitch (it spun sideways) early in the County season. Plus the none too subtle accusations that the Welsh bought this Test and that it shouldn’t be the first Test of such an important series.

Over 24 million dollars have been spent at Cardiff on fixing the facilities so they could get this Test. That means one thing; this is not going to be a result pitch. They will want to squeeze every last second out of this Test, and I assume the game will be a draw unless one team collapses (dramatically, always dramatically) under the pressure. Expect a turgid and low surface, one that will spin, but not sideways like first reported. This will be trench warfare cricket, perfect for the occasion, but not always pretty to watch.

i put 50 on huss for the most runs in aust first inn,
if they bat first there will be a couple of wickets because it has rained for two days and the covers have been on so it should seam around a bit and batting at 4 will be a good time....

Im going to sit out and see what the day brings and do some in play betting, heaps of questions before the match.

Centrebet have a offer to refund all Hi Bat bets if Hughes scores a ton, so Ive backed/layed Ponting to win the Aus Hi Bat and hope that Hughes can deliver with a ton. Then Ill get my Ponting bet refunded and make a nice profit :D

I like the draw. If the Aussies can't take early wickets then I think they may struggle, especially with Lee out. He is one of our quicks capable of getting the ball reversing, as he showed at Worcester. Our other quickies might be a little underdone and I reckon we will play Hauritz. Poms will be pretty confident after the WI tour and I think they'll take some beating actually.

Most runs Aus - Katich/North (both in good nick)
Most wickets Aus - Siddle (will be hitting the deck hard, especially with a little bit of moisture about)

I am sick of Stuart McGill (sbs host) already and how 'pumped' he is.

I backed S Clark for most series wickets and they are not playing him. what are they doing?

Sat out as well (so far), the draw was looking very juicy for the lay, but I just couldn't be sure of how docile the pitch would really be.
