Kenneth Ferrie went within a whisker of the magical 59 in a round, (had he done so, becoming the first player in European Tour history to do so), with a European Tour equalling third round of 60 in the Open de Andalucía de Golf last night. He made the cut by the barest margin, but now sits second on the leaderboard. He needed an eagle with his last hole, and his six iron grazed the cup, before he tapped in for the birdie.

A 60 has not been shot on the Tour (without the benefit of the preferred lie rule) for 40 years.

The US Masters tees off 10.15pm SA time Thursday night, and it should be a great tournament. Phil Mickelson is the favorite at $7.50, Tiger Woods at $12, followed by Lee Westwood at $17.

Top Aussies are Aaron Baddeley at $51, Geoff Ogilvy $67 and Jason Day and Robert Allenby both on $101.

Outside of the favoured trio, there are a number of players in good PGA and European form at present. Rory McIlroy has had some spectacular rounds in the last 6 months, and his long game should be more than suited by Augusta ($31). Similar to Justin Rose at $34, who has been in excellent form this calendar year.

Alvaro Quiros won the Dubai Desert Classic in February, and his excellent long game looks like adapting well to Augusta at the each way price of $126. If Day can find his best here, then he can be right in the mix, but needs to hold the concentration for the full four days - can be prone to fading for 4-5 holes and losing touch.

If looking at absolute bolters for the win, top 5 or top 10, then worth noting that Gregory Havret finished only a shot behind Graeme McDowell in the US Open last year and can be very good on the short game when getting out of trouble. $501 at present to win. Ricky Barnes is capable on his day and can hit a major hot streak with the driver when his confidence is up, and can give a sight at $176. Gary Woodland has been in excellent form on the US PGA tour this year also and been in winning positions a number of times, so the $151 is a good price.

Too many players have caught up to Tiger - who isn't the force he once was.
Not gonna put a heap on him to find out, if i'm gonna back Tiger anytime soon, I wanna do it knowing he can still play.

going with..... win, top 5 and top 25 on........
