If betting on races was outlawed, would anyone go to the races? Whereas if gambling was outlawed for the footy, popularity of the sport wouldn't be affected at all I suspect.

Spot on.
I can understand the REGULAR racegoers (well, the handful that are left these days) being a bit excited to see a champion racehorse in their own backyard but for the rest of the mug punters etc, i just cant see why anyone would care to go.
Pay $15 or whatever it is these days to get in.
Overpriced food and drink.
Punting at home on the net is 50 times more beneficial than being on course.
What is the average mug punter gonna experience live at the track that is different to any other meeting?
A horse that will go around at $1.04 ( so not a betting proposition) and will cruise in by 3 lengths.
Watching it live at the track, you'll see a bunch of horses in the far away distance and when they finally get close enough to reconise whos who (200m from the post) you'll see a horse emerge from the pack and then eased down over the line.
Probably about 10 seconds of viewing pleasure and then what ?
Go home or go back to battling the rip off on course bookies and drinking overpriced piss at the bar.
