Havelberg has been good in most games, but would have had only one game where he'd have polled. Judging by most people's assessment of the games it will be ahrd for the dogs to have a winner. The best players change dramatically each week. Of course, the umpires always have a remarkably different view than everyone else being in the thick of the action the whole game.

Dutchy wrote:From the Advertiser today -

INTERSTATE raiders are hijacking the Magarey Medal punting with bets flowing in from Melbourne and Sydney on the outcome of the prestigious SANFL award.

Adelaide-based Thornton Sports bet says bets of "a couple of hundred dollars" each have been placed from interstate on the two most fancied chances Ian Callinan (Central District) and James Allan (North Adelaide) this month.

There's no way to know if they're expat Croweaters or canny punters looking for a windfall on the annual award for the best SANFL player as selected by central umpires weekly voting.

In another first, punters have the choice of two markets this year with Darwin-based Sportsbet posting odds on the Magarey, plus taking bets on SANFL matches. Sturt 2002 premiership forward Stephen White is in Darwin and handling SANFL betting for Sportsbet.

Thornton Sports Bet says it's a first for them to take bets from interstate on the Magarey via the internet. But the local money has not been for the favourite.
"We're not holding a lot of money but the most money we've taken lately has been on (Clint) Alleway from North Adelaide," the spokeswoman said. "This week they're backing (Justin) McConnell from Glenelg. They think he can win."

Thornton Sports Bet and Sportsbet agree Callinan and Allan are the most fancied picks but Sportsbet is currently more generous with their odds. It has Callinan at $3 while Thornton has the goal-kicking rover at $2.80. Allan is quoted at $5 with Sportsbet but $4 with Thornton.

Sportsbet's Phil Hannah said Allan was a $2.75 favourite a month ago but drifted after being injured.

Sturt's Jade Sheedy, the 2002 joint Magarey Medallist with teammate Tim Weatherald, is the biggest shortener in the last month coming in from $34 to $9 with Sportsbet and $15 to $7 with Thornton. But it's not true Sportsbet has the longest odds across the board (see below). Hannah said it might be wise to look past the favourite.

"With Central winning so many games the Gowans brothers (Chris $16 and James $13) seem good value," he said.

Both bookies have internet connection.

Top picks with odds (subject to variation) - (Thornton/Sportsbet): Callinan ($2.80/$3); Allan ($4/$5); Sheedy ($7/$9); Paul Thomas (Central, $9/$13); Brett Backwell (Glenelg, $12/$15); Kieran McGuinness (Norwood, $14/14); James Gallagher (Norwood, $15/$11), Brant Chambers (Sturt, $17/$17).

Bayman doesn't the quote in middle of story say bets taken on internet?
Could mean two things person writing story didn't understand what they were writing about or person from thornton didn't know what the journalist was asking!!!
Who would the spokeswoman be?
Not theo's favourite nancy?

centreman, i can see what your saying & you can read it both ways & i'd think the 'interpretation' was taken out of context as we all know it is illeagle to place bets on the net in this state (sa) with sportsbookies (at least in some sports)
i thought secret groups were a thing of the past, well not on websites anyway

Luke Crane is now into $14 with Thornton.
You can still get $21 with http://www.sportsbet.com.au
The PROFESSORS will not have their market up intil the night of the Magarey.

Luke Crane picked up 20 kicks on sat v WWT, listed as Sturts best- will he get votes?
Now into $11 with Thornton...

Callinan has eased to $3.50- I don't think he will finish in the top 3
James Allan tightning slightly into $4 (& possible vote getter in sat)

I believe that Allan/Crane will run the quinella.

Callinan's an interesting one. You suspect he either gets a stack of 3s and 2s, especially early, or a few 1s. He's a flashy sort of running player. Sometimes they just can't stop polling, and other times they just seem to pick up a handful of votes. Symes has been getting a stack of the ball, so perhaps he's a possibility for a few votes over the last 7 or 8 rounds, and the form he's in coule get a few more in the next month.

You're missing out on a joke after last year's Magarey Medal betting mate.
He was included in the betting last year despite only playing one game.

Daniel Schell at $51 is interesting. Leading mark taker, sets up a lot from the backline, obviously well known to umpires, in the top team that will get a fair few 3-2-1's...

Unlikely to poll many. He might if the umpires like the way he plays, but not normally in our best 3, but often in best 8-10. Symes is the one from the dogs for mine, a lot of votes in the second half of the year. Perhaps more today, although best players were hard to spot.

No, he's not value, as he's ineligible.

Ian Callinan's chances could be hurt by the fact that he'll have missed the last few games of the minor round while he chairs the government's inquiry into the equine flu outbreak

Ian Callinan's chances would have been hurt mostly by the late season form of Symes and Thomas. Symes is my big tip. He could have just about polled in each of the last 10 games for the dogs, and surely several BOGs.

I think you missed ORD's humour Graham....

RETIRED High Court judge Ian Callinan will hold an inquiry into how equine influenza (EI) entered Australia, Prime Minister John Howard announced today.

Mr Howard said the Callinan inquiry had been granted wide powers to investigate the source of the outbreak, which has devastated the racing industry in NSW and Queensland.

"We are determined to find out what happened, how this disease was introduced, whether there's been a breach of quarantine procedures and protocols," Mr Howard told reporters in Sydney.

"(Mr Callinan) will be able to investigate every aspect of it.

"He'll be able to require people to give evidence, produce documents and he will conduct public hearings if he regards that as being necessary."

Many in the industry have pointed an accusing finger at Sydney's Eastern Creek quarantine centre, and an internal quarantine investigation is under way.

Mr Howard has also flagged possible wage subsidies for those in the racing industry affected by EI.

He said the government would be in a position in a few days to announce further assistance to the racing industry, including possible wage subsidies.

I think from here on we must all acknowledge how good PR is on medals
Last year he backed Chad Osullivan at $101 who ran a close 4th

This year he has specked Luke Crane at $51 after about RD17
PR was so so close CRANE ran equal 2nd

After rd16
_________
NELSON.......... 13
ALLEN............ 12
CALLINAN....... 12
MCGUINESS.... 12
CRANE ............11
CHAMBERS...... 11
SYMES............ 0

PR backed a $51 chance who was only 2 votes of the lead !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CRANE only polled a 2nd + 3rd vote for the remaining 7 rounds

FINISH
_________

ALLEN........... 19
CRANE ..........14
CHAMBO.........14
SYMES...........14 geez did he flash home !
NELSON..........14
