WADH, if you are silly enough to put up $5K to win $500 or lose all, go ahead.

At the moment $5K in shares could fluctuate +/- 10% in any given week but over the long term (months, not years) you will always regain your full investment.

If South Africa lost, you would need to have the same bet 10 times before you got your money back.

What would you do Dutchy?

I wouldnt touch it!

only way you would even consider it would be if you had a $100k bank roll therefore if it lost it would only be 5% of it and wouldnt hurt you as much....

There are thousands of gambling stories each day of $1.05 shots getting beat, just check out the live betting on Betfair especially tennis matches...

The Stock Exchange
Ive seen people who have done thier balls
Others who have cleaned up

MY SHARES

1978 BANK OF ADELAIDE [went broke]
1978 WOODSIDE PETROLEUM [bought $0-88 sold $1-9O something]
I was in a Commonwealth bank syndicate with those shares, and made a few dollars profit

2005 ? AMP
Was in investments with AMP and was given a few hundred shares
They were about $18
I wanted to fix up my backyard but had to wait for council approval to cut down a heritage listed tree.
It took months b4 the council sent someone over to approve [I was angry]
The shares went up to about $22 in the meantime [I was happy]
It made almost $3k difference in that period
A little while later AMP crashed down to $5
Last time I looked they were about $8
LUCKY ME !

Moral of the story is I know **** all about how to buy + sell and got lucky
i have never been inclined to invest again

Beats me how others can buy shares with little or no skill and knowledge
But then again that might get explained to me on this thread

MAL!

Its really all about riding the waves out.

3 days ago i made a $11,000 profit within hours of the stockmarket opening for the days trading. What did i do? I sold at a high price.

In the last 2 days i re-invested that profit.
Result is stockmarket has crashed again.
WHAT WILL I DO?
I definitely wont sell as at the moment its only a loss on paper ($6000 loss in last 2 days still= a $5000 profit on initial investment) the market picks up and im showing a profit im happy with i WILL sell again.

What i do is buy when the market crashes as the price of BLUE CHIP stock is then a bargain.

Then sell when market picks up and is on a high THIS = my profit. BUT NEVER EVER panic sell your shares. Wait out the waves and SELL when you can show a profit.

Its a simple philosophy that works for me.

So you think your $5k in shares will recover within months? If that is the case, that is seriously nuts - the current share crash is one of the worst on record - give it 4-7 years and most people will be back where they started...

if shares are kept 12 months or more, less tax applies.
buying/selling in the short term attracts higher taxes, but obvioulsy you're trading at a profit

RK
If its that easy why isint the rest of Australia doing it as well ?

Look at my AMP shares in a time frame of about 2 years
$18
$22
$5
$8
A mate of mine bought shares with AMP at about $23 a few years back
If he bought a block for the same $$$ he would be a richer man

As for the rest of you Amatuers betting on the stock exchange, feel free to brag for making $$$
But dont ever try and explain the gurulistic approaches you have made
Do you get insider trading ?
Do you follow global trends ?

HOT CHOCOLATE QUESTION
If everyones a winner why dont we all stop buying houses cancel superannuations and just plonk it into the sharemarket

THERE WILL BE THE INEVITABLE LOSSES AT SOME STAGE
