now im terrible with numbers. dutchy or someone out there can you explain JOHNO's predicament for me, (and johno, bu the sounds of it)

for instance- he backed stepanek @ $3.75 before the start of the match.
say $100 @ $3.75 -outlay = $100, for a profit of = $275

he goes to bed with stepanek all over hewitt. can you explain in more detail (figures) how can he lay off stepanek for a gauranteed profit.

-for example

outlay for stepanek win - $100
goes to bed and lays stepanek who is looking the goods at $1.50 - how much should he put on stepanek at this price to ensure a profit.

cheers guys, betfair sometimes goes over my head, but would love to learn how to do it properly and ensure profit.

what i THINK happens, is he would be paying more money to lose at that stage as he is 2 sets up... so he might be paying $1.50 to win but i might 'lay' him at $3 to lose...

i think???

I think they're suggesting backing Hewitt, which around Johno's bed tim had him at $5.30 in-game on Betfair ... So for example:

Stepnek $100 @ $3.75
Hewitt (say) $50 @ $5.30

Means profit would be Stepanek $375 - $100 - $50 = $225
Hewitt $265 - $100 - $50 = $115

Either result ensures a (tidy) guaranteed profit.

ahhhhhh ok that makes a lot more sense now
i thought u were backing the guy u picked to lose, not putting money on the other guy to win, which makes alot more sense

thanks mate

Yep CP has explained it well although on BF (presuming your inital bet was on there) you Lay Stepnek (back against him winning)

So say you have $100 @ $3.75 on Stepnek

Stepnek Win $275
Stepnek Lose $100

now if Hewitt got out to $5.30 in play that means Stepnek would have been around $1.20 to Back or Lay

So you LAY Stepnek $300 @ $1.20, this means your risking $60 to win $300, the $60 will come off your profit so scenario would now be -

Stepnek Win $215
Stepnek Lose $200

Your taking a slice off your potential profit to "green up" meaning you win no matter what happens

For those still trying to get the hang of Betfair have a look at their online demo...

wouldnt u win more tho if u put $100 on stepanek to start with at $3.75
then when hewitt gets out to $5's u put 100 on him instead of $160 on stepanek to lose?

Not really, the initial $100 comes out of your account when you BACK him, when you LAY him the $60 comes off your potential profit reducing it from $275 to $215......the green figures above are pure Profit so you would get that back plus your original $100

So thats why it is clever to lay off, sure you reduce your potential profit on Stepnek by $60- but you can now win $200 if he loses and get your initial stake ($100) back

hope that makes sense

Is another way to do it Johno, must admit sometimes this goes over my head at times.

$100 on Stepanek @ $3.75
$100 on Hewitt @ 5.20 (in the run, when he is 2 sets down)

If Stepanek wins - $175 pure profit
If Hewitt wins - $320 pure profit

(Pure profit is after the 2 x $100 outlays)

I'm with you Johno, is the eaier way to understand it, but sometimes i guess you can get slightly better odds by LAYING the other bloke?

No they LAY bet would only cost you $60-, not $160

In your scenario Johno -

Stepnek Win $175
Hewitt Win $300

so you sould win more if Hewitt won, which is fine if thats they way you wanted to structure it but considering Stepnek was 2-0 up Id put more of the profit over on his side

I think you have to go to a tab or pub and prove your identity before you can use your account properly. But I signed up online, and bet online and on my phone, and rip the money out at the local pub tab...

i think hewitt can beat roddick but needs to be at the top of his game from the start

he wont be able to win if he gets behind by a set
