Road trip anyone??

Chad Holloway, pokernews.com wrote:The World Series of Poker, in partnership with Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia, announced the World Series of Poker Asia-Pacific (WSOP APAC), a series of five bracelet events that will take place from April 4 through 15, 2013.

“Our goal is to establish the worldwide grand slam of poker and use our platform to elevate the game through a series of major championships,” said WSOP Executive Director Ty Stewart. “With WSOP Las Vegas growing annually and WSOP Europe poised for long-term success after five years, the time is right to turn our attention to the dynamic poker scene in Asia and Australia. Given Crown’s success with the ‘Aussie Millions Poker Championship,’ we couldn’t ask for a better partner than Crown to establish the Asia-Pacific’s definitive poker festival.”

“This exciting partnership brings together two industry leaders, and two strong brands, to create a premier poker event in this region,” said Crown Melbourne’s Chief Executive Officer, Greg Hawkins. “Our agreement firmly aligns with our objective of attracting the very best local and international players, all vying for a coveted WSOP bracelet. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved with the Aussie Millions and look forward to featuring WSOP Asia Pacific on our poker calendar in April 2013.”

Hawkins went on to say: “This initiative will provide Crown with significant exposure in Asia, Europe and America, and forms an integral part of Crown’s global marketing strategy to attract further international visitors to Australia and Crown Melbourne.” The multi-year agreement marks just the second time the WSOP has exported overseas, the first coming in 2007 with the introduction of the WSOP Europe. The event will be filmed for television and is expected to air on ESPN. The WSOP APAC schedule is expected sometime later this year, but the announcement has already drawn support from the international poker community. “It’s thrilling to think the World Series of Poker is coming to Australian soil,” said 2005 WSOP champ Joe Hachem. “I know first-hand what a life-changing moment winning the WSOP gold bracelet was and how it served as a catalyst for the growth of poker in Australia and Asia. It will be a dream come true to host a worldwide poker event such as this at Crown. I can’t wait.”

Numbers are certainly down from what they were a few years ago.
Weds used to be $65 and often saw 100 - 120 runners.

Now $80 with like you said 50 - 60.

think numbers started dropping when they introduced the $110 tourney on Mondays which has since gone to $125 and now on Tuesdays. These normally attract 40 - 50 runners.
Having the 2 tourneys on consecutive nights certainly doesn't help with numbers to both as potentially having consecutive late nights (usually midnight - 1.00am finishes) is a turn off for people like me who have a long trip there and starts work early. Last year when i was lucky enough to win a Monday $110 tourney, it went til 2.00am.

Went in after the footy last night and couldn't believe how quiet the poker room was.. 3 of us walked straight up and got seats on a $2/$2 table...

Was at least 4 tables that weren't even open

It has died down. Especially after 'Black Friday'..

But with everything the casino does, it comes down to what's in it for them... They increase the stakes, increase the buy ins etc.. which then leads to bigger pots which leads to a bigger rake per hand, aswell as increasing the rake % and increasing the capped rake.

I'm wondering if more people are either playing online or rake free home games.

Last night I started with $200 and cashed out with $480.. but if u add the rake I paid on the hands I won, I would have maybe walked away with closer to $600

It's died down because:

In cash games, the rake is the highest in Australia, it's a joke

They have no decent deepstack tournaments, and refuse to run any on weekends at a decent time. Also all payouts are topheavy and the blinds turn it into a crapshoot.

Congrats to our very own @lordrocco18 who won the $2400 buy-in Poker SA diamond event in the early hours of this morning over a field including the likes of Tony and Joe Hachem, Allan Rye, Gary Benson, Leo Boxell, Steve Lindeblad and Henry Wang.

Was helped by some lucky suck outs on the river on the Final Table but all winners need a bit of luck in this game. Also interesting to note that even though he has been crowned the official winner, he received less money than the runner up Tom Grieve (who has had an UNBELIEVABLE last few months at the Maylands) and also didnt receive the $3800 diamond all due to a deal done when they were 3 handed. Tom was chip leader ahead of Rocco and Joe Hachem at the time. 57 runners and i can only see that number growing markedly for their next Diamond event programmed for around September i think.

Yeah, great event and will certainly be bigger next time.

The split was interesting. Based on the chip stacks at the time I didn't think it really matched the ICM payouts (Tom got a very good deal), and also strange the way their was $5k left over. Seems an even better deal now you say Tom also got the diamond.
Still, a very good pay-day.

Another question - what do you get for your rake? I know you get some sort of food and drink but what specifically do you get for your $30?

I've played the $185 before and we had platters at the first break (good spread), then a parmy for dinner - other meals were available. Also got a drink in there too. Certainly more than $30 worth of food.

what about on a regular monday night? is it platters only or is there a parmi or something included as well?

actually sounds like a good deal, and a decent way for the place to "rake" the players without doing a dodgy.

Haven't played a Monday yet.
Suggest you play this weekend and ask the regulars. Tom G will be more than happy to help you out.
