Australian betting could be set for its biggest shake-up this century, with Tabcorp planning to finally have a National tote pool as early as the end of 2020.

Racing authorities are looking to address the leakage of turnover from racing to sport and a more competitive tote product is seen as one of the answers to the problem.

Tabcorp chief executive David Attenborough has previously said “a national tote pool .... means better depth and less volatility [pools]”.

The belief is one tote pool would give a bigger and more viable pool to bet into as more punters complain of being restricted by bookmakers.

It would also give smaller country racing meetings, trots and greyhounds a sustainable option for punters to drive turnover.

Tote or pari-mutuel betting gives the biggest returns to the racing industry, with Victoria taking more than 9c for every dollar placed on the tote, while NSW is returned around the 7 per cent mark.

Tabcorp officials are currently briefing racing regulators about the positive effect merging the three totes would have on arresting the slide in turnover and possibility growing tote betting again.

Racing NSW and Racing Victoria hold the key to establishment of national pool, given they oversee the biggest betting states. Both states will review the spring results before making plans for the future.

The main obstacles to one National tote pool are rules and technology to combine the three different pools. The integration technology is being developed to be available early next year.

The next step will be to get Queensland to align its bet types with those available in the other states.

The results of betting turnover during the spring carnival show a significant downturn, which has been put down to higher racefields fees and the introduction of the point-of-consumption tax.

The new taxes and fees have made pari-mutuel betting a more competitive offering for the first time this century, with its takeout of around 15 per cent.

Tabcorp controls three separate tote operations in Australia. NSW has its own tote pool, while Victoria takes in bets from Western Australia and ACT and the Queensland pool, which is combined with South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory.

The rise of corporate bookmakers has led punters to prefer fixed-odds wagering or the best tote product that the on-line operators offer. Another appeal of a national tote pool is that it would take away one of the bookmakers' major products.

The migration of punters to the fixed-odds products has seen the tote pools turnover in free fall at more than five percent year on, year on and as the pools are getting small the rate of decline accelerates.

The key to tote pool is liquidity, the bigger the pool the more confidence there is to bet into them without effecting the final price. It is seen a critical that the pools merge to give them strength again.

Yes to National Pools.
On the wagering side of things I also find the problem is that they are giving punters too many options to encourage them to bet.

I would remove: Duets/Early Quaddie/Running Double.
And supply the punters who bet tote with more information on the WIN pool which we want to encourage. Like $$ spent on each runner. Make it looks more attractive. I mean we know how much is spent on each runner on tote after takeout anyway, but even if they start to apply some figures on fixed odds WIN wagering.

They need to focus on the main wagering options rather than splintering off.

Of course no matter what TAB does, the punters won't punt if the industry continually comes under attack from animal cruelty and ethics which are gaining more momentum in todays society.

Keep Odds N Evens, though, right? :D

Haha, I can't keep up with all the options. Just wipe half of them.
Keep Win/Place/Quin/Exacta/Tri/F4 DAily Double/Quaddie. Do we need anything else really?

Don't mind an Any 2 myself. One of the top 2 or 3 on the tote and a $12-15 shot that's got a good draw.

Yeah, I’ll have a dabble each way and exotics, hard to gauge first up, his brothers and sisters have excelled as 4 year olds, hopefully he follows suit.
