NEW CONTROLLING AUTHORITY FOR THOROUGHBRED RACING
Racing Minister Michael Wright has announced that agreement has been reached on the composition of the new board to control thoroughbred racing in South Australia.
The new board is being appointed to run a re-vamped Thoroughbred Racing SA and is the first major initiative in the reforms of the industry recommended in the Bentley Report.
Mr Wright says he is delighted that all approached to join the board have accepted.
“I commend the work of the selection panel made up of representatives of the SAJC and SARCC. They have put sectional interests behind for the greater good of racing,” he said.
“As a result we have a truly independent board made up of people with a broad and deep range of specialist skills and experience. The real winner is racing.”
The 7 initial directors of the new TRSA are:
• Mr Brian Morris (accounting experience);
• Mr Andrew Killey (marketing experience);
• Mr Peter Pedler (legal experience);
• Mr Greg Boulton (business experience);
• Mr David Rasheed (metropolitan racing experience);
• Ms Frances Nelson QC (country and provincial racing experience);
• And Mr Philip Bentley (complementary skills).
Mr Wright says the selection of the new board clears the way for the overhaul of the TRSA Constitution and the development of the outcomes recommended by Mr Philip Bentley.
“I always wanted to provide the thoroughbred industry with an opportunity to have a leadership group in place which had necessary racing industry experience, yet was sufficiently independent to tackle key sensitive issues. I am confident that this new Board possesses both these skill sets.
“I thank and congratulate all those who have made a positive contribution to the resolution of these key components of industry reform.
“I would also put on the record my thanks to the Board and Management of the current TRSA for their contribution over the past seven years,” he said.
As TRSA holds a wagering licence under the Authorised Betting Operations Act, all appointments will be subject to routine probity examinations by the Independent Gambling Authority.
