Racing Greyhound Left To Die By Trainer

Postby magpie in the 80's » Tue Jan 15, 2008 6:00 pm

VETS hold grave concerns for the welfare of Go Bronco, a racing greyhound left for dead in sweltering heat in a stolen car on an inner-city Sydney street.

The $10,000 white and fawn dog was found on Sunday close to death in the back of the car which was dumped in Boyce Street, Glebe.

After running seventh in race five at Wentworth Park on Saturday night, Go Bronco's trainer had stopped to pick up some dinner at Glebe, leaving the dog in his car.

During the few minutes the trainer was away, thieves took off with the Holden Commodore station wagon - and Go Bronco.

A tip-off shortly before midday on Sunday led police to the car, in which the caged greyhound was found distressed and lying limp from heat exposure and dehydration.

Annandale Animal Hospital vet Gwilym Hunt said the dog was near death when it arrived at the clinic.

"(The dog) came in on Sunday with a very high temperature looking half dead, comatose, with dilated pupils," Dr Hunt said.

"His temperature was 43 degrees and that's a huge temperature when the normal range is between 37.8 degrees and 39.2 degrees."

Go Bronco was given a blood transfusion from another dog, had been on regular oxygen and was slowly improving, Dr Hunt said.

"Each day he starts to look fractionally better, but there's a very good chance he's not going to make it and if he does there's a good chance of organ failure," he said.

Go Bronco's trainer, based at Merrylands west of Sydney, is expected to attend the animal hospital this afternoon to check on the dog's welfare.

Go Bronco has recorded six wins and 20 places from 45 starts at Wentworth Park, Richmond, Lismore, Casino, Albion Park and Bulli.

*Edit*
Titled changed, as the greyhound trainer has since been charged over this incident

That gives me an Idea of what to do with car thieves seeing that nothing else seems to stop the F%#!$&^G Pricks From heaping misery and inconvenience on the generally innocently behaving public and Go Bronco.

For some reason insurance companies WONT insure Racing Greyhounds.

I have made a few inquiries as i have a rather valuable greyhound in my kennels and wanted to insure him more so for when i send him interstate etc just to be safe and if anything did happen to him i would be covered.

isn't that discrimination ? (horses you can & dogs you can't) surely both dogs & horses are racing athletes !!

Exhibit A on why greyhounds cant be insured.

January 19, 2008 09:00am

THE trainer of a greyhound which died of heat exhaustion after being left locked in a station wagon in Sydney has been charged.
The $10,000 white and fawn dog named Go Bronco was found close to death on Sunday in the back of the car, which had been reported stolen, in Boyce Street at Glebe.

The dog was taken to a vet with a temperature of 43 degrees celsius, well above the normal range of 37.8 degrees to 39.2 degrees.

He died on Wednesday.

The trainer allegedly parked the vehicle in Boyce Street, leaving Go Bronco without any water, after he was involved in a collision with a bus on Saturday night.

The trainer failed to stop at the scene of the collision, in Glebe, before he abandoned the car and reported it stolen, police said.

The 36-year-old Merrylands West man was arrested after a tip-off from the public and charged with public mischief, commit act of cruelty upon animal, negligent driving and failing to stop after an accident.

He has been bailed to appear at Balmain Local Court on February 13.

robber, in any aspects of life people will try a 'con job' to try & get money, & this goose is just a sMALl minority of his industry & i'd guess the % in other areas going for a con would be similar

so i understand the turnover of dogs but surely if you get a very good dog, you should be able to insure him/her :? :? :?

Townsville Bulletin

Miss Cruelty - 24Jan08

HOW could someone be so heartless? A woman hurled a greyhound pup into the ocean at Alva Beach at the weekend – and drove away.
The atrocious act was witnessed by dog lover Marianna Hoefle who was walking her two dogs with her partner on Sunday morning.
Ms Hoefle has now adopted the pup and named it `Lucky'.
She said she couldn't believe her eyes when she saw the woman drive off without the pup.
"My partner and I went to Alva Beach with (my dogs) Olive and Chico – as we frequently do – when we saw a red pick-up truck arriving and being driven along the sandbank," she said.
"A woman dressed in black with a big black hat descended from the vehicle with a puppy.
"The first thing that caught my attention was seeing her picking up the dog and throwing it into the water and running back to her truck.
"But she wasn't quick enough and in no time at all the puppy was right next to her.
"Then I saw her throwing sand towards the puppy with her foot.
"I thought all that was strange and too rough to be just play, treating a puppy like that.
"The next thing I saw her driving away in her truck and the puppy running desperately behind."
Ms Hoefle said it was heartbreaking to witness.
"On foot, we followed the tyre tracks of her pick-up on the sand and the footprints of the puppy and we realised she was leaving the area towards the main road," she said.
"We walked back to our car feeling heartbroken for what we had seen and were driving home when we noticed the puppy on the road between Alva Beach and Ayr, several kilometres from the beach. She was exhausted and wounded."
Ms Hoefle said she took the puppy home and reported the incident to the RSPCA.
"She has a pretty deep cut in her right rear leg," she said. "She is limping and underweight, too.
"She ate some dry kangaroo food and she drank some water as well.
"The rest of the day she slept."
Ms Hoefle said Lucky was quickly settling into her new home.
"There is a nice friendship growing among (the three dogs)," she said.
"Now we have a little drummer girl, because each time Lucky sees us she happily wags her tail against the wooden floor."
RSPCA inspector Cliff Singer said he would try to find the dog's owner.
"The dog was exhausted, bruised and battered and she needs some stitches for a wound on her neck," Mr Singer said.
He said he was interested to speak to anyone who may have information on the whereabouts of the woman.
"It's horrible. It makes me want to cry. I can just picture it, seeing her try to get rid of her dog on the beach," he said.
"It is an offence to abandon a dog and it has injuries about which questions need to be asked. You can be fined or be given a year imprisonment if cruelty is involved.
"There are other ways to get rid of an animal humanely. Bring it into someone like us (RSPCA) or arrange for someone else to have the dog. Do not throw it into the sea and leave it to chase after you."
– LEONIE JOHNSON and LIZ McKINNON

~~~~~~
Too often we hear of animal cruelty, and a minority of people who make others frown, especially when it comes to greyhounds, and the views of the Industry and Sport we love. A recent article in the Townsville Bulletin has angered and saddened us at Team Bundy, and a few in the Members Forums.
Team Bundy wanted to make a change and turn this negative into a positive, and must thank Pat, a member of ours for suggestion the foundation of this idea.
We are sending this to our mailing list and also to members of the Industry and forums. If any of you have an extra $2, $5 or $10, maybe even a little more, then we would welcome your donation to the fund.
Bank Details can be located on the Team Bundy forum thread : http://www.team-bundy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1939#1939
We would break the total amount into 3 amounts:
1/3 to the lady who has taken the abandoned Greyhound to help her bring it up and spoil it rotten.
1/3 to the QLD GAP Program.
1/3 to the RSPCA
We would call the cut off date for submission of donations the 01 Feb 2008.
Please email us once you have sent / deposited the money. On receiving your email confirming your deposit, we shall return an email with a receipt. We will also submit all names to the certain parties, so please make sure your full name is included in the email.
