GAWLER TROTS THE LAST EVER MEETING ? + PREVIEW

GAWLER FRIDAY 06/06/2008.
Is this the last ever meeting to be held at the Gawler Trotting track ?
The track will be bulldozed to make way for the expressway.
The expressway will go straight thru the track.
Gawler is a much MALigned track, over the years people have complained about the tight track suiting pacers who draw the frontlines.
Personally I really like Gawler trots and have gone up there since the mid seventies.
I had a nag in the 70s that won a race there, so it has good memories.
Do we have too many tracks in the North and deep North in SA?
GDP/GAWLER/PORT PIRIE are all on that side of town
Those meetings have soaked up just about all meetings
Strathalbyn/Victor Harbor only have a handful of meetings.
The people living in the Southern part of SA have been shortchanged with a lack of meetings.
A revamped Wayville track could be a future alternative ?
What do I remember about Gawler trots.
The bookies fleecing me in the 70/80s when they had all the advantages.
The old downstairs betting ring with the baggies shouting out the bets
The clerks recording them on ledgers
The principals blurting out sayings such as " back em each way." "6 to 4 the favourite"
The tracks back them had charisma, and good attendances
These days a bevy of punters frequent the TABS and Punt from home on the NET
Attendances are miniMAL thesedays
So whilst some nostalgia will be lost, the club would have been hard pressed to survive financially in the current environment.
I will go up there this Friday night
Oncourse bookmaker Peter Dammerell will be shivering in his boots
There is a contigency of Adelaides smartest punters who will be attending
MAL/BAYMAN/CHIEFY/CENTREMAN/SMARTER THAN SIMMO are all making the trip.
Be there or be sqaure
Who else is going ?
