GAWLER TROTS THE LAST EVER MEETING ? + PREVIEW

GAWLER FRIDAY 06/06/2008.
Is this the last ever meeting to be held at the Gawler Trotting track ?
The track will be bulldozed to make way for the expressway.
The expressway will go straight thru the track.
Gawler is a much MALigned track, over the years people have complained about the tight track suiting pacers who draw the frontlines.
Personally I really like Gawler trots and have gone up there since the mid seventies.
I had a nag in the 70s that won a race there, so it has good memories.

Do we have too many tracks in the North and deep North in SA?
GDP/GAWLER/PORT PIRIE are all on that side of town
Those meetings have soaked up just about all meetings
Strathalbyn/Victor Harbor only have a handful of meetings.
The people living in the Southern part of SA have been shortchanged with a lack of meetings.
A revamped Wayville track could be a future alternative ?

What do I remember about Gawler trots.
The bookies fleecing me in the 70/80s when they had all the advantages.
The old downstairs betting ring with the baggies shouting out the bets
The clerks recording them on ledgers
The principals blurting out sayings such as " back em each way." "6 to 4 the favourite"
The tracks back them had charisma, and good attendances
These days a bevy of punters frequent the TABS and Punt from home on the NET
Attendances are miniMAL thesedays
So whilst some nostalgia will be lost, the club would have been hard pressed to survive financially in the current environment.

I will go up there this Friday night
Oncourse bookmaker Peter Dammerell will be shivering in his boots
There is a contigency of Adelaides smartest punters who will be attending
MAL/BAYMAN/CHIEFY/CENTREMAN/SMARTER THAN SIMMO are all making the trip.
Be there or be sqaure
Who else is going ?

I have fond memories of Gawler too,
Freeze my balls off in winter, flies in the summer , if your not in the leading bunch its very hard to swoop down the outside and get the choclates. In the 70's and 80's did they have the woopy weed growing wild at Gawler because to even suggest revamping wayville when they can't even get Globe Derby sorted out is wishfull thinking. Who would fund it. My old boy says Wayville was the best for atmosphere but thats when SA trots was leading the way but unfortunately those days and track are gone and Gawler is headed that way.

I know a few blokes who will be going there just to make sure they start the bullDOZERs up after the last. Personally hope it pi$$es down and they are called off, but what i dont understand over there is that they are supposed to be making over the gallops track why can't they join/pump money into the gallops facilities etc. that way they can keep their club going and keep their racing close to their homes? The way that i see it the money they get from the sale will build a jog track or fastwork track and thats it, no money actually goes back into any racing?

R9...217
R10.1043

BEST BETS
___________
R3-7 URIPPA [$3]
gets a good run thru this draw and will be very competitive
looks the banker in the exotics as very likely to run 1-2- or 3rd
if we fluke EW a definite bet
if too short
EXOTICS

R9-2 REINE DE LA SIENE [$3-50]
well boxed and if we get EW odds you would be IN'SIENE' not to back it
field lacks depth and more than likely to be a major player in this
EW
or if too short
EXOTICS

BETFAIR G BRAIN LAYS
___________________

R1-1 DAYZEINAY [$2-50]
Only a fool and his money would be brave enough to take the $2-50
I think it will get headed off early and be a risk on the tight Gawler circuit
If its favourite I would suggest to lay this one on Betfair
And to think someone announced this horse could be a worldbeater
Will no doubt grow and leg and win a race like this soon, but at those odds a risk

R3-10 dreadful draw cant win
R6-2 named after G but wont live up to its name
R10-6 draw against and wont win

From the impossible barrier as well

As for JIMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMEHS tip in the first DAYZEINAY the shorter it is the more I will lay it on BETFAIR
Everyone makes mistakes including the Great Jim

r1 no 9 if you can get e/w odds it is worth a bet as it has been racing in stronger company than this in brisbane

r5 no 9 win should be too strong for them
r10 no 10 win obviously too short to back especially from the draw

Mal it would be fair to say the 80% of trainers and drivers live north of Adelaide, so makes sense to have tracks to the north. Makes sense these days to have most of the meetings closest to majority of trainers/drivers.

Forget about this wayville idea you bring up from time to time. Those days are over. racing at wayville would not be the big boost you think it would. Moonee Valley is close to the city. Could fire a cannon on a friday night and not hit anyone. People don't flock to the track like the old days.
The trots and dogs should sell there Metro tracks and join up with the revamped Gawler Gallops. Pump some of the Sale money into the facility and it would leave them with plenty of cash to invest, meaning they could put the interest into stakemoney.
Only problem is 3 codes would have to work together!!!!!!!
