does this sound smart i think saints might make the GF so say put $20 on them wich payout at $820, and if they do then hedge the bet and put 800 on geelong (presuming geel. make the gf) to win the gf

If you think St Kilda will make the GF then why not..... But I can't see St Kilda beating the Hawks.

I suggest you would be better off either
1) Betting on them to make the GF (some bookies have this option)
2) Betting on them to win this week, and then re-invest your winnings next week if they do win.
whichever odds look more attractive to you. Then you don't have to worry about hedging any bets.

The Cats just keep coming in. They were $1.35 before the weekend and now into $1.28.

My thing is that you could put money on them to win the flag at $1.35 before the weekend, yet they were paying $1.15 to win on Saturday. To win the premiership they have to win three times to get the $1.35 payout, yet to win the first game in paying $1.15....but they still shorten????

the only way that the cats wont win the flag is if buddy gets 12 shots on goal and boots 10-2.

I agree and even then that might only make it a close game
