Being a new-comer to punting i'd like to ask for some assistance from you astute punters out there. Sometimes references are made that i just don't quite understand. Much appreciated if anyone cares to explain.

* odds of 6/4 on = $2.50 - How's that determined?

* 5/1 the field in an open race - How's that determined & how can i use it bettin on the race?

* and when someone refers to the dam of a horse (i.e - out of the same dam as Augusta Proud) is the 'dam' similar to a 'litter' of pups?

Cheers!

firstly 6/4 on is not $2.50
i'll presume you mean 6/4 against which is $2.50

if you have $4.00 @ 6/4 the return is $10.00
if you have $4.00 @ $2.50 the return is $10.00

5/1 the field = the favourite is 5/1 the rest therefore are equal or longer in price, the market determines who is the favourite, you use it by deciding whether it is good value or bad value (ie do you think the horse should be shorter or longer in price)

the dam = mother of horse
the sire = father of horse

i hope that brief summary is of help to you jl

i believe they are very similar but NZ go to a rating 11 or 13, not 100% sure, where as here we have rating 1-10
