Prize money varies from $1700ish on a Thursday Night at Angle Park depending on the grade to $500ish at Gawler to even less at Pirie and Strath.

going 50/50 on place prize money you wont get much return if any at all as even most 50/50 trainers will now take the first $50-$100 of prize money then split 50/50

Now this all depends on the quality of the dog. If its a decent dog then you will find a trainer will go straight 50/50 on all prize money as the trainer knows he has a dog good enough to recoup regular prize money. Now on the other hand if its a dog that will struggle on a consistent basis to run in the top 3 not only will you struggle to find any trainer to go 50/50 i also think you may struggle to keep it in their kennel for any decent length of time on a 50/50 deal, unless your paying a weekly training fee then im sure the a trainer will be more than happy to keep it as long as you want to keep paying the fees.

Ryles - when looking at a young litter of pups to choose a grey hound from, what should you look out for? i've heard steer clear of 'blue pups', what does this mean?

Look for a proven dam line that has been crossed with a sire that will add the strengths the damline may lack.

how longs a piece of string.
we have had pups, break ins and provens.
do want a return from the start or do you want the gradual build up or the pup coming along and then being a dud.
it can be frustrating.
the best way is to get a proven outgraded dog from interstate,
have the synd going and see how they handle the ongoing money costs.
a pup cost you from day one with no return for at least 18 months while a proven can pay its way.( i did say can ).
its a tough game,

hope that helps

I would think from my memory (I grew up around greyhounds and tracks) Blue(Grey really) greyhounds are a rarer colour (or used to be ) than other colours.
Dad still has a dog or two these days but his health isn't the best.
I can recall him having some quick dogs that were very small almost Italian greyhound sizes ,one winning a maiden sweepstakes back many many years ago .And taller dogs that were better suited to distance races.
Just remember two champion dogs bred together may not produce a champion dog .
