LENDING $$$$$ ON RACECOURSES + TABS+ CASINOS etc etc

Have you ever lent $$$ on a racecourse or elsewhere ?
I have and too often never got my $$$$ back
I have refused lending $$$$ out now for about 15 years to any person for any purpose

I reckon Ive been stitched about $5k lending $$$ to Gamblers over the years
The racecourses are the places where Ive been stitched up mostly

I have numerous stories
Here is the first

I was betting nod [credit betting ] with a dog bookie
My limit was once I got to $200 in debit I could not bet until it was paid
I had a weekly account with the bookie
A punter that I knew well at the dogs was skint
He asked me to lend him $$$ to havabet
I said I aint got cash, but he knew I had a nod account and insisted I place bets for him there.
I explained that I have a credit limit of $200 and could not bet over that limit
He had a $100 that lost
He had another $100 that lost
He wanted $200 on the 1/1 money favourite in the next race
I said no, as the $200 limit applied
He asked a couple of times to place the bet, I said I was not able too
THE DOG WON
At the meeting the following week,I asked him for the $200 to settle with the bookie
His reply was
" No Im not paying."
" WHY NOT ?"
" Becoz as far as Im concerned I backed that winner for $200 and your not getting paid."

RESULT
I acted in good faith, I ended up being $200 worse off

MALMAXIM
Never lend money to Gamblers , its one of the worst investments you can make, you can only break even at best.

Im obviously not as serious a punter as you lads, but I've lent $$ a number of times over the years ... When I was younger I got dudded a few times, but never by enough to hurt, and a note was made in a mental black book.

Over say the last 10 years I've lent plenty, but only to those I consider my closest mates, and I've never had any problem getting it back.

Pretty poor form by the bloke in your story above Mal, I dunno how people can sleep at night when they behave like that.

SEPTEMBER 1990
Shifted to Enfield in the 80s
My local TAB hangout was the Enfield TAB
TABS were great meeting spots, made some new gamalbling buddies there
One was a guy known as Rus
Popular guy
We would see each other almost every Friday for about 12 months
Nice guy
We lent a few $$$ to each other if either was broke
It was a 2 way street between us
Good guy
It was the friday b4 the afl g/final
Rus opened his mouth saying ES would beat CO
We had $100 on the game I backed CO with him
CO won
Went back to the TAB the next Friday Rus not there
And the next Friday, and the next .....
To this day Ive never seen Rus since that g/f eve day

There was this guy I once played cricket with and socialised with
Punter who gambled at the dogs in the late 80s
We went car hunting this day
He bought a 2nd hand car for $1100
Then it happened
He asked the guy doing the book work to bump the cost of the car up to $1600
It wuz done
WHY ?
Becoz he was given the $$$ by his girlfriend
He told her it cost $1600 and kept the $500 to punt with
PS
The snake ended up marrying her

Story 3 was not me, in any case that would have been me about 345 girlfriends ago

4
Living in the seventies when I had an ego ..
The high school bookie was a lad called Rob
He let us bet on anything
I backed the Caulfied Cup winner [Gala Supreme from memory]
He gave me set odds of 8/1
I had 10 cents each way [G ive come a long way since then]
I went to collect on the Monday
He asked for my receipt [written on raffle tickets]
I said I didnt have it
He refused to pay me
I never found the ticket
I never got paid
I cant and wont explain how I exacted my revenge
BUT
I went in competition after that
I became the biggest bookie at school

1) I lent money to a mate... (He was a bit of a pseudo Panther)

He said he would pay me back the next day.... well the next day didn't come for about 6 months later...
Mrs SCD was very upset at the timeframe and demanded I get the money back..
Having the "when are you going to pay chat" wasn't fun, but he finally started paying back in installments and I got it back over the next 6 months...
Moral of the story.. don't lend $1,000 to Panthers on course ;) ;)

2) Mates and I all go to Melb Cup...
I use to buy all tickets and catch up on the money later...
One year a certain Bald SANFL Boundary umpire agreed to come... and I got him Tickets..
come 2 weeks before Melb Cup "My wife won't let me".. (the thumb print turned into a bald spot)...
Had to try and onsell those tickets, which was a very very painful exercise...
Moral of the story... don't pay out before you have the money from them first!!
Port Power has 16 years history at Football Park...

The Port Magpies have 40 years history and the two shall never be confused or combined
