Need RIDA back. Since "HA" departed, I thought it would've been a case of "rise & rise"....
Outside the square- why not limit/ban the amount of imports (I/S dogs)? Would have to be on a sliding scale though (over a 5 -7 year period). I/S would only be eligible for special lead up races to feature events, heats & finals (for SE).
Benefits:
1) Owners would have to purchase dogs whelped in SA
2) The breeding industry, bouyed by this, would then set about increasing their quality, knowing they have a market
3) Prizemoney would stay in SA, therefore making it a more attractive proposition for breeders/owners/trainers, who wouldn't watch winning cheques end up in the Wheeler bank account- then re-invested back into breeding ad infinitum
4) The standard may/would slip for a while- who's going to notice? Let's face it, the prize money will still be the same! Times may be 1/3 second slower, but the dogs racing each other will sort themselves out- the only time you'd notice, is during SE events, or any I/S trips.
5) Bookies (if they still exist) would/should "know" the product better, therefore offer better bettting value in the ring
6) SA will still produce some "stars"- they just might not stack up against I/S competitors

in one of your points of issue about SA bred dogs, as you may know they do run a series for SA BRED dogs, like the cuurent PRODUCE Stakes etc, but not enough of them. they also support local trainers, owners, breeders with a boonus to any winners that are SA Bred i believe.
I reckon that they should have a race with all interstate dogs running, collins would have 300 and everybody else in total 10 (being generous) might give collins a chance of winning a cup!!!!!!!!!!!

well, my suggestion makes every race one for SA bred dogs. Hard & tough call to make, but something has to be done. It's only my suggestion, but I believe it attacks the cause, not the problem- why would I go out & rear a pup, train it (I 'aint paying $50-$70- the going rate? per week training fees) & then rock up on race nights & see a Wheeler owned dog knock me off, & despite my dog getting "prizemoney" still being outy of pocket.
2nd scenario- I buy a Dog trailer, walking machine, ultrasound- 1k-2k. I buy a young pup $500-$1k for a local pup, rear it $30 p/week(?), get it broken in $500 (?), & then I get it fit for racing. Vet bills, feed (beef/roo.chicken necks/kibble), vitamins, trips to the beach + my time etc. It's a Grade 5 dog- against other SA dogs, it pays it's way, small recuperation of outlay on dog. Race against I?S dogs, I'm in it for love (same for 1st scenario).
Question- why would I bother?

its hard to argue with that. I think every race is eligible for the SA BRED BONUS, but i do stand corrected.
I agree, i have a share in pup, albeit no good, but im not going to bother getting another one and racing it here, if i went into another dog it would be racing interstate. country victoria race for the same money we do, hence wheelers rejects come here!!!!
another point of issue ill be asking is proizemoney is going down, but what about the fines? are the fines going to drop at the same percentage as the prizemoney.
in my mind the local industry is absolutely screwed!!!!
i hope that someting positive comes out of the meeting next week, that they take on board all suggestions and so something that will help the industry, at least try something. i mean if they try and fail at something sure theres going to be people criticise it, but i would rather see them try and fail then sit back and do nothing!!!!!!!!

Many aspiring young dog trainers have dropped out
of the industry for the same reasons you have
brought forward in an excellent post.
There needs to be more and more incentives for
trainers who are prepared to restore the equilibrium
in this state.

Where does this $6 go? Towards staff wages? Why would I pay $6 to get in, when the Pub/TAB down the road is free, & I can get a meal at the Pub.
mighty_tiger_79 wrote:if you dont go to the dogs why?
My disposable income only goes so far- I also have footy training Tues & Thurs. Years ago, I used to go Mon, Tues (trials) & Thurs.

Your point- if an SA bred dog wins a race, it's eligible for the bonus. If an I/S dog wins, no bonus paid, & prizemoney heads I/S
My point- only SA bred dogs can win races, therefore no "bonus" is needed, as all prizemoney stays here.
I can't see it happening, but this is an "outside the square" thought thrown up for discussion.

i agree with you about the cost to get in, i mean its the same with the gallops and the trots. At the dogs you pay $6 to get in at McQueens Tavern which is joint to it you can get a schnitzel for $13 and most other pubs you can get a good feed for around the $10 mark.

if the dogs reduced the entry fee to $3 would you go?

I reckon $2 would be suffice, enough to keep out
the riff raff who reside in the area.
As for that schnitzel it was $13-60 for it and a coke.
I had it wednesday coz i was winning a swag.

Imho, Angle Park needs to attract (& keep) punters- free entry has to be the way to go. Then, I may be tempted to at least go for a meal (at a reasonable cost).
Biggest problem is that there's no "atmosphere" there. Atmosphere adds to the joy of the experience- no-one wants to "be seen" at a lame duck.
My passion for dogs is not what it used to, plus lifestyle factors mean I don't get down there much. To be honest, I know nothing about the dogs running around, & do not want to waste my gambling dollar as such- it's hard enough for me to win on the footy.
My interest in Dogs may be re-invigorated, only through foxtel- that's not likely, as I won't be getting it. I still prefer dog racing far & above anything else, but at the moment, it's a low priority.
I daresay I'll return one day.

COLLINS
Some news of interest for MT79.
Leading trainer Steve Collins is likely to shift to
Victoria soon.
As reported on the Catching Pen show on Foxtel.
The report on this show says that the SA industry is in turmoil
and for all Greyhound followers to attend the forum on wednesday.
I know you are extremely passionate about your doggies MT
and hopefully your inferences will be treated seriously.
PR are you attending ?

it would be a crying shame to see COLLINS leave the state i mean he is the premiership trainer for god knows how many years now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mick Stewart was talking to some lads about a winner he had, and mentioned to Collin he was only 94 behind, i mentioned it would be nice if you could get catch him, which is very unlikely given Stewart has 4 dogs running compared to 4000, but his strike rate is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!
