Brisbane massive Value..... they should be $1.04.... Essendon are a shambles... how any side that has lost to West Coast and Richmond in the last two weeks aren't more than $3 is beyond me....

Sydney value I agree, but not confident - think Richmond might topple them.....

HAWKS match up well against StK. Will come out firing after last weeks efforts. Unless Clarko has told them to make plans for holidays in September already.

Would think that the Swans would be UP for this game being Michael O'Loughlin's 300th. A VERY well liked and respected player by both playing group and coaching staff alike

I think Essendon are pretty good value at $2.47. They play the G very well. I am feeling confident this week, last week I was not confident at all but I do think they will beat Brisbane this week.

How can you be confident.... the last two weeks they played two teams with NOTHING to play for, and were trying to tank and essendon's skill level meant that they still couldn't beat them.... Maybe the Ecstasy tablet might help!??!

Brisbane by 40+ is the value...

Bookies wary of teams' motivesArticle from: Font size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment Jon Anderson

BOOKMAKERS are guided by tanking when framing markets and in some cases have suspended wooden-spoon betting because of concerns over selection and match-day moves.

Norm Short of Flemington Sportsbet said spoon betting was problematic.

"How can you bet when you don't know who is fair dinkum?," he said. "I'm an AFL fan and believe they run the game very well but this rule is terrible.

"There is no transparency when you have a rule like that, a negative ruling that allows a prize for losing.

"I suggested four years ago they bring in the lottery system used in the US where the bottom four sides go into a hat and first drawn gets first pick."

Gerard Daffy of SportsAlive said rank and file punters don't want to back teams such as Melbourne and Fremantle.

"Whether it happens or not, and most bookmakers would believe it does, there is a stigma attached and that isn't healthy," Daffy said.

"I know Melbourne nearly won against Richmond but the reality is they didn't and they were unlayable with us, blowing from $3.30 to $4.50.

"Coaches can always justify their moves but the suspicion remains."

Gary Davies of TAB Sportsbet said tanking had to be considered in framing markets.

"Take the West Coast-Essendon game on Sunday," Davies said.

"We bet $1.40 Essendon and $2.80 West Coast, when they would have been more like $1.60 and $2.25 but for this issue."

Norm Short wondered if the Eagles received a call from the AFL during the week after their insipid display in Round 17 against Fremantle.

"They were awful in that game and from the outside looked like they didn't want to win," Short said.

TAB Sportsbet and Betfair pay the AFL an annual fee of around $500,000, part of the league's total annual collect of $2 million-plus from bagmen.

That's not very smart.

Put cash on them to make the top 8, then start backing the teams you need to lose to win...

Collingwood have been superb at night this year (8-3) Adelaide has been the opposite (2-4) with 2 wins against Freo and Richmond...Adelaide are 1-5 ATS at night...I also love the fact Collingwood havent travelled for a while and are good at it...Collingwood for me

Brisbane return the G to face Essendon who come off a hiding from WCE and a 6 day break plus travel, Im going to this game and have to have a bet! Brisbane at the line and ML multi will be the go, this should end the Bombers run officially

Carlton/Geelong, prob a no bet game, will have a look closer

Bullies play their 6th game in a row at Itsadud Stadium, while WCE travel over on a 6 day break, normally Id fade the 6 day break but WCE did have the previous week at home cause of the derby so should be rested, the line here is 50 points and WCE have only lost once over this margin to the Saints early in teh year, love the WCE to keep this within 50 points and will be a big play for me, esp as Bullies are doing a heavy load training at the minute

will be back to update the other game later

A FLOOD of money from well-informed punters has forced bookies to suspend betting in the Saints-Hawks clash.

Betting will reopen tomorrow morning, but more than $100,000 was plunged on Hawthorn because of uncertainty over the injury status of key St Kilda players.

The Hawks were crunched from as much as $3.25 into as short as $2.60 by form analysts aware St Kilda might decide this is the time to start resting border-line players.

Leigh Montagna (hand/elbow), Michael Gardiner (calf), and Steven King (shoulder), are all nursing injuries, with coach Ross Lyon conceding there were plenty of "sore bodies" after the clash with Sydney.

Sam Gilbert (back) and veteran defender Max Hudghton did not train on Tuesday, with further speculation one of the club's key talls might not make the trip to Tasmania.

Justin Koschitzke is nursing a sore hand and Nick Riewoldt a sore jaw after the pair collided, but both played out the game last week.

Despite Hawthorn's loss to Port Adelaide last Sunday, there has been talk around all week that the Hawks have set themselves for a season-defining game against the unbeaten Saints.

More in tomorrow's Herald Sun.

Multi for me. Carlton at the line (Carlton 7 day break, Geelong 6 day break, Carlton terrible form at the G, and ordinary last week) might just sneak in with Freo line, Essendon line, North line.

Hi score - Western Bullies
Low score - West Coast
Hi Margin - Bullies
Leading Goalkicker - Milne

It was reported the Hawks got into $1.20.
The Hawks matched up on the Saints very nicely, even with the Saints at full strength.
I'd assume Ross Lyon is trying to test their mettle, but this could really backfire on them.

Why would you want to drop 5 key players and gift the reigning premier a ticket to the finals?
The Hawks team is finding momentum (Beaten Collingwood, should've beaten Geelong, Should've beaten Port), astounds me why Ross Lyon is prepared to rest a few players and then possibly have to contend with the most dangerous side in the comp, in the finals. Hope this comes back to haunt the Saints, when the Hawks beat them in the GF. Wouldn't that be great!
