It was race 3
Angle Park, Wedneday day meeting
On course ,I witnessed the run of the day
The red dog Awkward Moment was in the pack on the first turn
It was badly hampered and fell near the winning post
It landed in such a way the dog was on its bottom and could not get on its feet
It appeared the dog had perhaps broken a leg or a hock
Awkward Moment tried to get on its feet several times, but was statued to the track
The problem was the other dogs in less than 25 seconds would be running at it

Then I saw the best run of the day

A man in the crowd sprinted from the stands area and frantically ran as hard as he possibly could
He ran onto the track, lifted the distressed aniMAL up, and managed to get himself and the dog off the track
Seconds later the other 7 dogs thundered past the finishing line
Thanks to this quick thinking man, a possible collision or chain collision was averted, and perhaps a no race

This man was the effervesant and sMALler than life character Mick Stewart
Mick is a greyhound trainer, who rose to prominence with his star dog Brute Bernard in recent times
For those who know Mick it is no surprise that Mick did the instinctive today in an awkward moment

Sensational stuff and without doubt the run of the day

The dog appeared to be OK in the kennell house
The vet was checking it out and there didnt seen to be any consternation
Dog was walking about albiet gingerly

From the time Mick Stewart rescued the dog to it being within the kennell house the dog was not hollering and appeared to be calm

Those who saw the dog struggling on the track feared for the dogs safety at the time

the funny thing about it is that only a few minutes prior to that taking place the herd of elephants were recounting when at strath one day Micks dog was storming around the pack on the home turn to take the lead and Mick was running down the trotting track chasing it home

then of course he got fined for such an act, I wonder whether GRSA will give him a reward for todays super effort
