World Cup Preview
The World Cup has rolled around once again and the question is who can knock Australia off its perch? The Aussies have won the last 3 World Cups, but unlike the previous years they will not be heading into the tournament as favourites. Most seem to think it is a race between four, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Australia. But as most World Cups do, there is sure to be the odd upset and that could make way for England or Pakistan to make their way through to the semis. With matches taking place across India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, the pitches will play an important role, as we have seen in the warm up matches. One thing is for sure it will be 6 weeks full of action packed cricket.

The outright favourites India haven't won the tournament for 28yrs, but now have one of their strongest sides. They have so many match winners with the bat and they they could be posting so big scores. But they did struggle recenty in their series against South African and they may just crumble under the expectations of the whole nation. On paper they are the best side.

The other co-hosts Sri Lanka will be amongst it when comes to the crunch. They play their important games at home which is a huge advantage for them. They have some great batsmen at the top, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Dilshan and Samaraweera, then the worlds leading wicket taker in Muralitharan, who on these pitches will cause all sorts of trouble. Should ease through the group stages and a great chance for the semis.

One team who is desperately looking to win their first World Cup is South Africa. They are as strong as anyone, but in the past have fallen at the wrong times. Suprise to leave out Boucher and they also bring in the spinner Tahir who nobody has seen much of, but they rate him highly. Such an impressive line up and if they can put it together they are a real big shot at going all the way to the final and winning it.

Ricky Ponting and his Australian troops face one of their biggest tests. Most people have written them off and they will be wanting to prove everyone wrong. After losing the Ashes they smashed England 6-1 in the ODI series. One person who they will miss is Michael Hussey as Australia of late tend to collapse in the middle and that is where Hussey would steady the ship. Now it will be up to his brother David or Cameron White to fill his shoes. Both Ponting and Clarke need to step up, for which in the warm up games they have done so, despite losing to India and South Africa. They should be good enough to make it through to the semis and then that is where someone needs to stand up. Just remember that Australia are still the number one ODI ranked team in the world.

Two teams who are the underdogs to make it to the semis are England and Pakistan. It is hard to see how England are much chance of going very far in the tournament as Australia completely dominated against them. Pakistan are a team capable of pushing the top sides all the way. But its still hard to see them winning the whole thing as they would probably have to beat 3 of the top 4 sides. Then you have New Zealand and the West Indies, who may cause an upset here or there, but really won't trouble the top sides too much. After that it is the likes of Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada and Kenya who are just making up the numbers.

Few bets for the Cup

West Indies out in the group stage @ 5.50
South Africa top their group @ 3.25 (effectively its 3.25 to beat India)
South Africa/Sri Lanka Final @ 13.00

Plus wagers on my predictions from cricket thread

Despite Aust's recent form against England I really think we're not a shadow of the team we were last WC. Hence I'll look to lay them* (*not every single one of them - my name's nor Warnie). Sth Afr, India and Sri Lanka for mine.

Another bet I'll have... WI to not be able to chase down anything over 260 in any match.

Some easy money to be made in the early stages of the WC.

Bangladesh $1.27 v Ireland
India $1.47 v Englad

Might multi those with West Coast to beat Gold Coast $1.18 in the NAB cup (unrelated I know!)

Total odds of $2.20.... Looks like printing money to me!
