Who's heading along next Monday?

Mate and I who syndi up on Cup days have found the last 2 winners of this event without much trouble, but looking at the field for this year I think we're going to have a much tougher time of it.

Anyone feel really strongly about the chances of any particular runner(s)?

Usually there's a favourite horse running around for the easy punt option, but this year that would leave me to choose from King Diamond, Capecover, Pergola, Vesper and Tibouburra Travis .. That's before including the in-form Maunatrice and Guyno, and always handy Macedonian .. My head hurts already #-o

Sportsbet's All-In market is as follows:

An aside to the punting, who reckons they should just run the Cup on a Saturday and then give us Melbourne Cup day as a public holiday....

Im not fussed either way, because I always book leave for Melbourne Cup week, so Im not an ideal person to answer.

With or without the holiday I think the Cup should be moved back to May though.

I've got a bit of time for Kincaple.

On the minimum and if he gets a start will be worth a few bob E/W.

Got to worry about King Diamond - most thought he wouldn't run 2000m.

He ran 2500m with the topweight on Saturday. Surely he won't be at his peak after that tough run.

I am friends with one of the owners of King Diamond. Adelaide Cup has been the goal from day 1 for this preparation and they never doubted he would get over 2000m. TBH I didn't think the run was really that tough on the weekend. Settled well, got put to sleep for the majority of the race then overpowered them at the end.

I'll be on the diamond, and heavily.. will love the 54.5kg.

TRAINER Lou Luciani has the lead-up form and the barrier he wanted for the Adelaide Cup.

On Monday the Perth trainer will find out whether Adelaide Cup second-favourite Guyno can really run 3200m with 56.5kg on his back.

Luciani and Ballarat mentor Darren Weir appeared the big winners in yesterday's Adelaide Cup barrier draw, as Lord Reims Stakes first and second placegetters Guyno and Maunatrice drew barriers seven and five respectively.

By contrast, favourite King Diamond will have to overcome barrier 14 for his philosophical trainer, Mark Kavanagh, in Monday's $400,000 Cup.

"There have been times in his career when I've wanted (Guyno) to draw out wide but in a field of 20 I reckon barrier seven is pretty much perfect," Luciani said.

"The 56.5kg is towards the top end of the weight he has carried to win races but he's also only 2.5kg above the minimum weight, so you'd have to say he's not badly in.

"There are a few horses in the field that you'd have to question over the 3200m.

"I don't think it's a huge issue for him, as he's run 12th in a Melbourne Cup (in 2008). I'm not sure he's going as well as he was in the lead-up to that Cup but, in saying that, this race isn't as strong."

Weir hoped the Morphettville track would stay in the dead range as it was rated yesterday, and he said it was not out of the question that Maunatrice might be scratched if the surface was considered too hard on race day.

Maunatrice will be ridden for the first time in her career on Monday by Melbourne jockey Mark Zahra.

"Barrier five isn't too bad - although I would have preferred 13 on a wet track," Weir said
