well basically if you do markets on a race where it be dogs, trots, gallops etc, you should work out the % to be around 115% - 120% which is what the TAB bets.
now the table shows you how much percentage each price is
eg $2.00 is 50% so to get a return of $100 you need $50 which is the percentage - 50%
you go through the field and work out how much money you need on every runner to get a $100 back and the percentage should add up to around 120.
eg
1 - $2 - 50%
2 - $5 - 20%
3 - $10 -10%
4 - $10 -10%
5 - $30 - 3%
6 - $20 - 5%
7 - $9 - 11%
8 - $6.50 - 15%
the % = 124 to get back $100 on this race you would spend $124 and back every runner. the percentage = how much money is required to get back $100.
hope that helps

Percentages are calculated as follows...
100/x = % (x=$ value)
North Adelaide are $1.30 this week-
100/1.3=76.92%
Port Adelaide are $3.20
100/3.2=31.25%
therefore the match %= 76.92+31.25=108.17
If a Bookmaker holds a balanced book ($7692 on North to win & $3125 on Port to win), then he holds $10817 on the event, yet his payout figure (either way) is $10000- he profits $817 (or has an advantage of 8.17%) whatever the result.
As a punter, if you have a 2 horse race, & the % is less than a 100, you can back both outcomes accordingly & not lose.
Ie Tasmania v New Zealand both are $2.50 (40%)
$40 on each results in a return of $100, so really, your getting 100/80 either way
Mal may explain it a bit better, but that's the guts of it-
Bookie must have his %'s over 100
if it's under, the Punter has the advantage.

guys and gals, thanks for providing the explanation for this. I was sitting next to a loudmouth at the TAB, and Hilton Donaldson said that the bookies were betting 45% so "get on the TAB". The bloke next to me said that they should take their f'ing licences away and I had absolutely no idea what he was on about. So I politely nodded and grinned.
So now I can nod and grin WITH KNOWLEDGE that they are ripping us of!

P.D. Must Be Getting an Appearance Fee to be at the Trots as how else would he be making money there ???
Bets 150 - 160% on local Trots and Doesn't bet on interstate anymore.
He would be lucky to write 50 bets a meeting.
Geez, If i was the Bookie there, I'd be Betting Win, Place, E.Way, Concession, Fav Out, Interstate Trots and Dogs and Afterwards would be Down in the Bar offering a service on England Races and Bunbury Trots.
i.e. I'd Be PROVIDING A SERVICE to the punters like they used to get 20 years ago.
No Service = No Punters = No Bookies
